    It was going so well...........

    Home building a new machine:

    Asus AV8 MoBo
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ CPU
    1GB Corsair ValueSelect RAM
Seagate Barracuda 80GB S-ATA system drive
    Seagate Barracuda 160GB S-ATA media (100GB partition) & Back-up (50GB) drive

The build went very well as (apparently) did the XP instal. Loaded all the MoBo drivers & Utils - restarted as each element installed - and started to load programs - again re-starting after every instal.

Booted up this morning and everything looked fine. Added some Netscape profiles from my old win98 machine ready to import into new Netscape and then shut down. This afternoon I booted the machine up only for it to hang on the XP screen. The three travelling blue squares are there and on the move but that's as far as it goes.

Shut the machine down using the power on button and then re-booted to Safe Mode. Tried a System Restore to a point just before I went on-line for the Windows Updates - but Restore said it couldn't help! Booted to Safe Mode again and took the Restore back as far as I could. It did restore, but still won't start. Disconnected 2nd HDD and Restored (again) back to current state and still no luck.

Looks to me as if I might have to clean install XP and then go through the other instals one by one until I hit the problem.

BTW have Norton installed if that makes any difference.

    Any thoughts, anyone?

Get rid of Norton and it may solve your problems. Have heard many bad things about their software. I know one person who installed Norton it it completely bombed their system....it needed a complete reinstall afterwards.

suggest you run msconfig and look at your boot.ini; you can add /sos at the end of the XP line below [operating systems] and that will omit the splash screen so you may be able to see where the hang-up is.

    Thanks guys

I've gone back to square one - reformat, clean-install. Will slowly re-install drivers and apps - but not Norton! Have installed a clean copy of the system on a back-up disk just in case I get more problems.

    Wish me luck!
