    XP geniouses needed!!!!!!!!!!

    Big trouble here guys.

My Toshiba Portege laptop (with XP Professional) has given me an error message. I tried to upgrade windows again and i was told that when you upgrade, all of your files are copied onto the XP disk and then replaced, but upgraded. I used a CD-RW copy, and a techinician (who is certified in windows) said that there wasn't enough space on the CD-RW for all of my files, and the uprade stopped half way. I got an error message that says..:

    Error:
SXS.DLL: Syntax error in manifest or policy file "D:\ I386\asms\6000\MSFT\WINDOWS\COMMON\CONTROLS.MAN" on line 0.

    ***

    Error:
Installation Failed: D:\I386\asms. Error Message : Manfiest Parse Error: Invalid at the top level of the document.

    ***

    Fatal error
One of the components that Windows needs to continue steup could not be installed.

Manifest Parse Error: Invalid at the top level of the document.

The /\ isnt there, but the message repeats like that. The technician said that if i could get an actual XP disk it would work...is he right?

    HELP ME PLEASE!

How could your data files get copied onto an XP disk during an upgrade? Do you mean System Files? How they be copied to an XP disk and then replaced, only better? If you do not have a legit XP cd w/a product key yet, you need one now!

By upgrade, what do you mean? Update Windows? You said you are running XP Pro- what are you upgrading to?

    I'm confused.

Did you have a laptop that was running XP-Pro already?

If so, what caused you to try to "upgrade windows again "?

And I have no idea what "when you upgrade, all of your files are copied onto the XP disk and then replaced, but upgraded " means.

Sounds like you were trying to reinstall the OS, but using, shall I say, not a legitimate OS disc. None of the files will be written to the cd during an install/reinstall. Rather the cd is putting information on your system. If you need to reinstall, get yourself a real XP Operating System disc. If you still have problems then, post back.

You need a real XP Pro cd and a valid product key, and it can't be "borrowed" from a friend, or both of you will be unable to do any MS updates, and worse, Windows XP may quit.

I hope you backed up anything critical on this computer.
