Yesterday, pc ran fine, cpu fan been a bit noise past few days so I got a new fan/heatsink. Took it out, replaced it. Fan seemed loud so got a different one. Turnd comp off, sat for a while. Replaced again. Turn comp on. Seemed to load fine then monitor screen when crazy like old tv's did when no signal in the old days.

Screen did this after desktop came on. Then went normal, then blinked to black screen then back again. Did this a few times, then monitor went off to suspend mode. Could not wake.

Reset button. Comp did check disk, came on, froze at desktop. Rebooted, repeat, came to desktop, screen when funny, then froze at normal. Rebooted, tried Safe Mode, hung up at mup.sys and no further.

At one point i was able to work the comp, backed up some files, after a few hours, turned comp off. Back to same problem. Unpluged every thing I could but the usb mouse and ps2 keyboard. took out my sound card, and a new TV card I put in. (comp ran great even after the tv card).

At first though it was bad cpu fan. Now wonder if its the vid card or my PS.

Any ideas or if you need more info I'll try to provide. Maybe take a photo of the screen messed up?

    Thanks

Is there a fan on the graphics card ? Is it running ? The problem you describe could be due to RAM, graphics card, PS or just a loose cable somewhere.

Did you clean off all the old thermal compound from the CPU and apply fresh each time you fitted the heatsink/fan??

    To RSINFO:

Yes fan is on grafix card. GeForce 7600 GS with 128m ram, has fan, running. Checked all cables. I do know the PS was hot, even though it has two fans running, my son's comp is identical to mine, his runs cool, wifes runs cool, and one Im on now runs cool.. well cooler then mine.

To PeteC: Yes cleaned off paste, put paper thin layer on cpu.

I rebooted with XP CD in, and was able to get safe mode. Ran norton, fine. Running defrag now. Only thing on comp now is vid card, USB infered mouse, ps2 KB. Unpluged scanner, joystick, UPS, printer. Pulled out sound card, TV card.

I tear down all comps once a month or so to blow em out. I did this to mine while it was down the first time to put new CPU fan in.

I think you should Google for mup.sys - there are a host of hits which I don't have time to read through right now, so over to you :)

Forget: MUP = Multiple UNC Provider!

Very unlikely to lockup or cause a boot problem. A MUP error would show up on a Domain or Internet.

Besides if it hits the screen it has loaded, it is the next unseen item likely the Video controller that is the issue.

Does the boot menu give you a VGA Mode option?

Reseat the controlller if not a onboard and tighten any wires or cables going to the controler. You may have pulled something loose when dealing with the CPU fan.

Last night I was able to get into normal XP mode. Left it over night, seemed fine. Turned off this morning, added back my sound card, took off my vid card, blew out any remaining dust, reset card, checked all connections.

Turn PC on, came to desktop, the monitor went into suspend mode could not wake. Reset button. Got into VGA mode part of safe mode, came up fine so far.

Not sure if at this point the vid card calls for so much power or not.

I did look up the mup.sys info befor coming here, a lot of posts were from just after SP 2 came out and never had an issue with that problem. My hope was that it happend to some here and found a fix I may have missed.

I still suspect my PS, and since I still run on a non PCI-E system its hard to find a replacement for my AGP card cept maybe online.

Screen shot of what monitor looks like, after normal desktop, and befor either suspend mode (cant wake up) or total lock up.

Your issue is related to video, perhaps you are right the PS may be weak or the Video card is on the way out.

This is proved by your being able to boot up in vga mode which bypasses the Video card and uses the generic (software based) VGA driver.

While booting in Safe Mode any line that shows on the screen has loaded sucessfully. It is the one that don't show the next one that is the issue and normally the next one after MUP is the video controller.

The reason for all the hits on MUP is because that is what everyone see's as the problem. I have never heard of MUP causing a boot issue.

I suggest that you d/l the latest driver for your video card from the mfg try an update first and if that don't work then uninstall it and do a clean install of that Video card!

You may can cover all of the above by updating the Motherboard drivers from your mfg.

I found an older video card that I kept from my upgrade, installed that, and it booted fine. I should of tried that long ago but didnt dawn on me.

Still however, not sure if it is the PS just not pumping out the power needed by the card, or it was the card dieing. I'm gonna buy a new PS, and card anyways, put the PS in and old card, see what happens, if anything I've got the new card to use.

Thanks all. Will up date after next week.. long needed vacation.
