My PC was attacked last week with a very malicious spyware program that I could not remove so I had to bring it to a computer repair shop where he wiped my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP. I've been reloading and reconfiguring my PC but I can no longer access any FTP sites with Windows Firewall on . I access ftp sites via Windows Explorer & Internet Explorer, I do not use any FTP software, because IWindows Explorer & Internet Explorer have always both worked fine for this prior to the re-install of XP. (The "Computer Professional" who re-installed XP was of no help what-so-ever).
If I turn the Firewall off I can get access FTP sites fine, and I run Norton 2006 which claims that I do not need Windows Firewall if I'm running it, but I do not want to have another intrusion problem and I was running Windows Firewall and had no problem accessing FTP before the re-install. I've followed every thread I could find on what to turn off and on but nothing seems to work other than completely turning off Windows Firewall.

    Any help?

    Thanks,

    Justin

    Hi Pete,

Thank you. Yes, I did see that. No luck on it. I've scanned quite a few message boards addressing this issue. Some offer what should be workable advice, but nothing has helped.

Question. Does anyone know if one needs to run Windows XP Firewall if they are already running Norton 2006? (as I'd mentioned Norton 2006 says it's not necessary), and I've read on this board (and others) that duplicate Firewalls are pointless.

Thanks again for your response :)

    Justin

Microsoft's recommendation is that you should not run two firewalls to avoid possible conflicts.

I missed your point re. Norton - a lot on tonight on the Board. Turn off the Windows firewall, Norton is far better, even if it is a bloated program :)

BTW Windows firewall only works inbound, Norton is bidirectional.

just make an exception for port 21 in either/both firewalls to allow ftp.
