After a long wait Cable Internet access finally arrived. After a few bugs work out, all seemed well. I found today by going to Gibson's Security Check that I had several Ports open. Then I found that XP Firewall was disabled, or not turned on. I put a check there to enable it.

The Cable Modem will not let anything in when the Firewall is enabled, no Browser or Email.

Is this a normal thing or do I need to do something to make this work?

Ports 1002, 1025, and 1720 are shown to be open. 1025 has to do with something referring to DCOM. 1002 has something to do with ILS, and 1720 with NetMeeting which I thought I had uninstalled using Kellys Corner information.

    Somebody straighten me out please!

    Mudd,

There shouldn't be any problem having XP's firewall on with a cable modem, as long as it's on the host computer only.

    Mudd,

I'm not at all familiar with XP's Firewall as I don't use it - incidentally it only works one way - incoming, but for information and troubleshooting go here and search for 'Firewall' under Windows XP :

    http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=fh;[ln];kbhowto

I use Kerio Personal Firewall which is freeware - the full trial version downloads and converts to the freeware version after 30 days or so - i.e. some functions are disabled at this time. It takes a bit of setting up, but is relatively straightforward and is a favourite here on the Board

I agree that there shouldn't be a problem with the XP Firewall. I had it running on the dialup that with no problem. It and ZA together block everything and gave me a Stealth reading throughout. Trouble is that it does now give me a problem. It's blocks all traffic from my Cable Modem to the PC, both host and client.

Pete: I failed to mention that I have ZA on either computer. It does a fine job as far as I can tell. Have used it since I started PCs years ago. As mentioned above, it and XP Firewall gave me a Stealth on my Security check.

When I ran the Cable Setup Disk the File Sharing and XP Firewall were disabled by it. I reset the File/Printer to on but when I check the XP Firewall to enable, it does but I loose connection to the internet. I think that is not right. As Steve said, it shouldn't, but it does.

I wrote in hoping someone else might have experienced this and would have a remedy. Still looking.

I don't know how to close Ports that are not in use. That is beond my experience or knowledge.

    Steve - Petre

After replying to your post to my, so called problem, I went again to the XP Firewall and just to prove to myself what I was telling you was right, I checked it and again tried to connect to the internet. It "did" connect!

Now, what an idiot I have made of myself. It didn't work the other day. I tried twice and it was blocked from the internet.
Now this morning after giving you a long-winded story, I try it and it works as it should.

Glad you people can't see my face. I'm embarassed and will never waste your time again until I am double and triple sure of what I'm posting.

I'm old, so maybe you can understand!!!

Gotta throw my $.02 worth of ideas in here.

I may be guessing but, does that mean that you have two Computers and are using ICS ( I think that is what it is called )

And unless I miss-understand both PCs need to be on in order to get to the Internet.

You would far better off to install a Network card in each machine, connect it to a Router and disable MS one way Firewall.

Then with you can have both machines on at the same time with only one account. And both machines do not need to be on ( powered ) to do it.

    I myself use a Lynksys BEFSR41

Just don't shut the Router down like I did. :( Then I sat here and wondered why nothing would go to the Net. And the Router also blocks a lot more than the XP Firewall.

Then use Kerio which has TWO WAY control. XP firewall does not block anything going out.

And you can also run any old OS on any machine. I mention that becasue I believe ICS may be OS dependent. ( some have it and some don't )

My idea is a bit more costly I will agree. But in the long run ( at least in my thinking is ) well worth it.

And there is PLENTY of help here if you need it.

    To All That Have Replied

Thank all of you. Your advice has been helpful. Now I have the bugs out, all seems to be OK.

The cross/over and ICS seems to be OK with us. We are an old couple that have two PCs separated about 50 feet apart. We get along better this way! I usually get up first, turn the PC on and that allows her to use hers. No problems as I'm the last to bed at night.

I realize a router would be better but that would require me to have more expense to hire someone to crawl 50 feet through a low crawl space to string the wire. I've done this once with the cross/over. So as long as it works I'll stay with what I have.

PCs do odd things. Like the XP Firewall enabled would not allow Interconnections at all. Had to turn it off. Then I posted about the problem. Got good answers. Then tried again and it had no affect. I repeat, "PCs do odd things. "

    Thanks all.

If you are happy then so am I.

:) I hope for your sake your machine always comes on. :)

I made a mistake and powered down the Router one night. My Wife got up first the next day and had no Internet access. And believe me I heard about it. :(

Your history duplicates what I go through here. Maybe it's something that we did as young people that caused this!!!!!

Well here is my latest not so smart trick.

I downloaded and installed a new Bingo game on my PC. My wife figured out how to use it And it took me two ( 2 ) hours to get my PC back.

Do you think it would be a good idea if I got it installed on her machine also ?

BTW. This new Bingo game is the first game ever that can be use on 5 different machines without buying another copy.

:) I think it would be in my best interest to get it on her machine ASAP. :)
