XP will not let me chage a files attributes from READ ONLY. I 'deselect' Read Only, leaving the three choice boxes blank. Click 'Apply' (or OK) and up pops the dialogue box. I then select "applying the change to all sub folders" and OK. On checking, the attribute has remained as "Read Only" selected. I discovered this when copying folders to CD-RW. Curiously, one one occasion today, having 'written' some files to CD, I tried changing attributes again (on the CD) and up popped a dialogue box confirming the 'change'. Delighted, I tried again with other fiolders but no joy at all. Having written this I just checked. Everything is back to Read Only. What to do please.

    John,

Everything written to a CD inherits the 'Read only' status because you cannot write to a CD in a CD-ROM drive. If you copy the files to your HDD the 'Read Only' attribute is carried across, but can be changed on the HD copy.

Not too sure about CD-RW - would need to look into this, but provided it is 'mounted' you should be able to make the change.
I'll check out my CD-RW back up files.

    John.

Just checked out one of my CD-RW's - file attributes are as the original files and I can change them on the CD-RW.

Suggest you take a look at this post
