    [Resolved] XP downloader, smitfraud and others...

    I've got an XP Pro SP2 computer that is infested. Originally the desktop background was changed and windows would open randomly. It had an updated version of symantec which detected the viruses but wsa unable to clear them. I installed spybot s&d 1.5.2 and was able to clear off all but smitfraud and relevant knowledge. I removed the relevant knowledge spyware manually through the control panel. I tried running Kaspersky online scanner. It found around 70 other infected files but I was unable to clear them. I have installed and run deckard scanner. Please see the log below. Please let me know what steps I can take next to clear these issues. Thank you very much!
    Deckard's System Scanner v20071014.68
    Run by MED on 2008-03-03 10:25:04

    I'd like to see what MBAM can do to clean this up. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) from here or here and save the file to your desktop.

    Double click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select 'Perform Quick Scan', then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Post the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

    Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

    Right click the desktop and select Properties.
    Select the Desktop tab, then Customize Desktop.
    Select the Web tab.
    Remove the following entry if present, and any others you don't feel are legit if present.

    C:\WINDOWS\privacy_danger\index.htm

    A bit more to do, so lets use another tool. Download ComboFix by sUBs from here, saving the file to your desktop.

    It's best disable realtime protection applications as they sometime interfere with the tool. Check this link for your applicable programs.

    • Close all open programs and windows
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • It may reboot your computer and resume running when you logon. Wait for it to complete. When finished, it will open a log for you. Post that log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.
    Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

    Note - ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.

    Note - Combofix makes some changes when run to prevent autorun/autoplay of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices, to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you to use those devices, please ask how to reset it.

    Highlight and copy the contents of the code box below and paste it into a blank notepad, then save it to your desktop as;

    Filename: CFScript.txt
    Save As Type: All Files (*.*)

    Code:
    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\wininit.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rlai.dll
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{e3dcf32c-d76e-494f-92ff-3cf77e5d3a2a}]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ekvgsnw.1]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{59D95FC4-8C15-4224-9AE5-43867E8BD69E}]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ekvgsnw]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
     "{E3DCF32C-D76E-494F-92FF-3CF77E5D3A2A} "=-

    Close all other windows and programs. Now drag the CFScript.txt onto ComboFix.exe and drop it, using the left mouse button. Combofix should run and may reboot the computer when it's done. A log will open when it's complete. Post the contents of that log along with a new HijackThis log.

    Please do not click on the ComboFix window while it is running a scan. This can cause it to stall.

    Then, download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Check the boxes to the left of:

      • Windows Temp
      • Current User Temp
      • All Users Temp
      • Temporary Internet Files
      • Prefetch
      • Java Cache
      • Recycle bin

    • The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
    • Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK then exit.
    Reboot

    Run Kaspersky online again, save and post the results.

    Combofix issue?

    I started running combofix as directed approximately three hours ago. Currently it is stuck after "completed stage_9 ". Is this normal or should I be concerned? I have not clicked on the window since it started, just rolled the mouse around.
    Thanks!

    No, that's not normal. Please open the task manager and kill any of the processes below if running.

    sed
    grep
    vfind

    ComboFix should continue to run and complete.

    combofix issue still

    I'm unable to pull up task manager or any other windows at this time. I tried ctrl-alt-del several times and couldn't get even an end task window to pop up. I can pull up the options menu on the combofix window by right clicking and can minimize that screen. I haven't tried closing it or restarting the PC yet. Another odd thing is that the taskbar has disappeared. When I minimized the combofix window it appeared as a small bar one level above where you would expect to see the taskbar. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    :confused: Well, only thing you can do if it is still hung is close CF and restart the computer. If you have any problems upon restart, please let me know before doing anything.

    Please download this file and run it. It will search your machine for the C:\ComboFix folder & when found, will create a zip file comprising of files from the C:\ComboFix folder. This zipped file shall be named _sUBs-.zip & should be located on your Desktop. Please upload this file to the author's submission channel so that he can attempt to determine what cause CF to stall. Make sure to leave a link back to this topic.

    I've notified the author that the file was uploaded. Lets wait until he has a chance to check it out before proceeding with anything else.

    Thanks!

    Yes, the zip file was received. I have been waiting to see if the author of CF looked it over and saw anything he felt might have caused the stall before we did anything else. I'll check with him shortly and find out. In the meantime, would you do a new dss scan and post the log. I want to make sure there's nothing new.

    Thanks,
    I just wanted to make sure I didn't need to do anything else.

    Please delete the ComboFix.exe file you currently have and download a fresh copy from here, saving it to your desktop.

    Highlight and copy the contents of the code box below and paste it into a blank notepad, then save it to your desktop as;

    Filename: CFScript.txt
    Save As Type: All Files (*.*)

    Code:
    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\wininit.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rlai.dll
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{e3dcf32c-d76e-494f-92ff-3cf77e5d3a2a}]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ekvgsnw.1]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{59D95FC4-8C15-4224-9AE5-43867E8BD69E}]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ekvgsnw]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
     "{E3DCF32C-D76E-494F-92FF-3CF77E5D3A2A} "=-

    Close all other windows and programs. Now drag the CFScript.txt onto ComboFix.exe and drop it, using the left mouse button. Combofix should run and may reboot the computer when it's done. A log will open when it's complete. Post the contents of that log along with a new HijackThis log.

    Please do not click on the ComboFix window while it is running a scan. This can cause it to stall.
