    Hi,

I am having some problems because my XP doesn't read some files (.fts, .trg, .tlb, .isu, .swb, .rsl are just a few examples); and when that little window sends me to browse the net I never know what it is that I'm supposed to do on the site it sends me to...

    thanks for any help

Hi Terry and welcome to Windowsbbs!

You must not be too concerned with the fact that XP can't open certain files directly. That usually just means that the file has to be opened with the Parent program that created it. There are many file types like that on your drive so don't let it bother you.

Concentrate on using the applications listed on your Start > All Programs Menu and you'll do just fine. These main programs will pick and choose the files needed to do the job you ask of them. That will include using several of the files you think can't be read by XP.

    Cheers. :)

    What Zephyr said.

    For instance,

FTS = Windows Help Full-Text Search Index File. Windows Help uses it but you wouldn't ever see any sign of that.

    TRG A Symantec LiveUpdate File

A fairly complete list of file extensions and what they are can be found Here.

Thanks for the tip. As a matter of fact I had never bothered about it until last week, when I downloaded a freeware program (a simulator to turn maps into 3D images - Genesis II) and the trees don't show up because they are .is files, which the computer also calls Ls files.

Do you think the problem happened during the download? Or maybe Windows XP isn't compatible with this freeware?

    :(

    Thanks for your help.

Yeah, Terry, that program was apparently last updated in 1999, before XP was even released and I don't see that it was ever updated since.

It looks like a nice program so maybe try to contact support, if such there be, and see what gives.

You can still use it but you'll have to BYOB. (Bushes that is)

    Cheers. :)

Thanks for all your help, I'll take your advice (and I will also pray for an upgrade to the program) and say something if I get an answer from them.

    :)
