    Dear XP-Experts,

My Windows XP crashes normally after about 10min.
Sometimes it is earlier, sometimes it is a little later.
It looks like that especially the use of MS Outlook
lets the crash happening earlier, but it also happens
    with Outlook not being started.
The same machine works fine without any troubles using
Vista Ultimate (also wit Office, Outlook) on a different
    partition.
I believe it is a driver or a service that is started with
Windows XP, but I can`t manage to figure out which
    one.
I am working on this problem quite a while without
any kind of success, so I would be very happy, if
you have any kind of idea.

Please a "Mini "-Dump after one of the crashes at the end
    of the text.

Thank you very much for your help

    Hi Just A Novice,but..

You said you installed Vista on another partition. First I would check to see that the 'Restore Points are not conflicting. Check out the restore points that you have active in Vista, and make sure that the drive wich you are using within XP is not active. And vice versa, check within XP that the drive wich it controls is not that for wich is active for Vista. As far as the restore points go.

Usually the problem with a computer running, then shutting down after several minutes is due to a memory stick being bad.But since Vista runs, there should not be a problem there.

I would normally given a single operating system, first check the computers "Hardware" for any check marks.Within the My Computer area. If you don't have any in there. The problem is probably with a driver conflict as you had noted. Yet if a Driver conflict ,wich one ?

This is dependant on the hardware of course that you have installed on the computer.

I guess you have dual booted. So consider the locations for the Virtual Memories, between the two operating systems softwares. Be sure the partition locations do not overlap. And perhaps set a Custom size memory allocation for the computer you have.

I would suspect something with the NIC card,or 'network drivers next.If you for example use the same information to connect to the Internet for both Operating System softwares. I dont have a problem utilizing my DSL modem for example for both W98SE,and XP(dual booted). But they both use different settings in order to use the 'same modem

The same can be true for a printer, wich requires static information.Or something for security purposes.

You might just have had a bad install for the XP you are using.Wouldn't be a big deal just to reinstall it.

    _________
With your hardware, within XP,try disabling within the System Information,Hardware, devices wich you know are installed for its hardware. This can help troubleshoot your problem. Working your way toward what the problem with a Driver could be.

[ ]Check the Virtual Memory. Make a custom one. And Check the REstore points so that drives dont conflict among the operating systems.

[ ]Look at Microsofts Update of course. And consider the Video Driver as well, this certainly would be the first hardware I would look at.

[ ]Otherwise just re-install XP,saving your application documents.

[ ]Consider if you used FAT,or NTFS on your drive partitions. You can create an NTFS partition from an FAT32.But you cannot revert back to the FAT32 following converting to FAT32.

And 'what is your hardware line up. Do you have a manufactured computer-HP,Dell,etc. Or a certain motherboard manufacturer, onboard video,...etc..whats your system stats if you know about them.

Easiest thing to do is troubleshoot, like I showed, then reinstall XP. Careful though, look into the Knowledge base about conditions that need be considered dual booting with the newing Vista operating software. (one before the other etc.).

This will jog you a ways.

Thank you very much for your answer.

I have reinstalled my system, this time with XP only.
I have just setup all necessary drivers and a few other tools.
The only larger software package is Windows Office and
unfortunately I still experience the bluescreen (fastfat.sys)
after some time (normally >= 30min). It still feels that
the intense use of Outlook (btw, my .ost-file is about 1.2GB) accelerates the crash, but it is very hard to be certain on this.

The hardware I am using is a Dell D820 Laptop with an
Intel T7400 CPU, Nvidia Quadro NVS 120m graphic-card,
Dell 5505 UMTS modem, Intel 3945abg WLAN, and Dell
    Bluetooth 350 card.

It would be really great to get some hint to narrow down
    the possible causes.

Please find attached on of the new crash dumps:

Did you Ask Dell, how bout Microsoft KnowledgeBase

    Microsofts KNowledge Base
    Dell.com

You can search Microsofts Knowledge Base for stuff.Microsoft.com,and Help and Support,Search Knowledge base:

    I entered keywords:

Microsofts Knowledge Base for "FastFat.Sys "

I went to Dell to look at a D820

    I found a Dell "latitude" D820.The T7400 is a Dual Corel 4 MB Processor ! on a 667 MHz bus !

Tell me if Im wrong, but that machine should still be under 'warranty'.

I dont have any experience with Notebooks. They are not easily constructed, although have the same basic components.

If you know how to access the BIOS routines. You could jot them down.If you know something about them-you might realize that resetting (thus re-initializing a certain hardware routine)might do the trick.

OEM software ,Im assuming your operating system software is a Dell system software Disk.Is futsy. Bugs and fixes are usually addressed via the manufacturer.Since they are most adept at doing so for their hardware.

    _________________
My first try would be to suspect a 'drive'driver. With the clue 'FastFAT.sys ". Like I said before, usually the drive is an NTFS drive format. You didn't suggest the type of format, the operating system software type,(e.g.retail,oem)when you installed the operating system software.

You should probably contact Dell.com for some assistance.Since the machine might still be under waranty. And their assistance can help you directly.Even if it isn't under warranty.Dell.com would be the first place to go.The T7400 is a very recent processor.A very powerful machine.Yet there could be a 'bug'in/for the drive within it. If Vista runs 'ok,then you might want to think it from there.

Subtle differences in Operating System software, from Retail, and OEM.For your hardware.

You might for example be able to replace the drive for nothing.

    Whats Dell tell you ?

____Note____________:eek: I am only a browser of this forum Windowsbbs.com. A software gliche can probably be deciphered from someone with expertise in that area.Your machine is fairly recent. As Dell still has them for sale.My instinct,is a Drive partition problem. The drivers akin to running the IDE.So for me,I would do TS there.Resetting within BIOS maybe,.Considering Operating Software parameters (OEM,Retail etc).

Thats a really powerful notebook. Ive worked on an OEM one time. OEMs have sometimes a hidden partition on the drive.Wich may be loading default parameters . I took the safe route, and simply loaded the partition information 'back'onto the computer. Certain rules apply for OEM software. It is possible that you have backup software on the drive. Or 'default entries that conflict compared to your 'Custom Instalation procedures.

Note that 'deleting this partition sometimes, can 'void your warranties. So certainly keep this in consideration. And Contact Dell.

I suspect the experts are looking on.

The use of the 'System Restore, rather than a straight instalation of the operating system software. Is more pertinent to a proprietary instalation. The 'System Restore, will rebuild the operating system software,if it is in fact a case of the necesity of utilizing the/a hidden partition in order to do so.

    Contact Dell for sure.

Finally it looks like I found the problem. And as often it is very easy and obvious after you find it.

I store my Outlook .ost- and .pst-files in an encrypted drive (using Steganos Safe 2007). There were only 50MB free on this drive. It looks like this was not enough for Outlook writing temp-files and performing the auto-archive function. Under Windows Vista nothing is happening, but under Windoes XP you get a bluescreen whenever the encrypted drive is completely filled.

I extended the encrypted drive by a reasonable size and no bluescreens anymore.

Thank you very much to everybody who tried to help.:)
