I installed xp the day before. It did not upgrade or replace the 98 SE, so I have dual OS now.

The problem is that xp cannot detect the right modem; it only detects the fax modem. As a result, I cannot use the internet. When I use the 98 SE, there is no problem with the modem. If I cannot surf the net with xp, there is no use for xp. I tried to uninstall it, but it is even harder to do so.

How can I fix the modem problem? If it is not fixable, how can I uninstall the xp?

    Please help.

For modem information (and your siutation isn't unusual but is fixable) do a search of the XP section using internal modem as your search terms.

more information on the modem, and more queations

Thanks for your response. I have read those postings, but still don't know how to solve the problem.

The modem is MDP3900V-U, and I also downloaded the driver for the modem from a website.

Do you think it is the driver problem? Should I load the driver to xp to see if it can correct the error? Where do I put the driver?

I misclicked my skill level. I should belong to the beginner level.

    thanks.

    modem question again

I finally got connected to the internet through the fax modem which xp detected, but the speed is much slower than 98 through the domem MDP3900V-U which xp couldn't detect.

Is it okay to use the fax modem? Why it is slower? Thanks.

What is the rated speed for the modem part of your fax/modem? And what make/model?

(and note to zhang - I merged the new thread you started just about the fax/modem with this one and deleted the "new thread" since it was simply a continuation of the original issue - Newt)

    modem confusion

The rated speed is 115200, but the actual speed of the modem is about 36000. I couldn't find the make and name for the modem.

I also checked the invoice, which gives the name of contexant v90/56k. But when I booted into win 98 to check the actual modem, it says MDP3900V-U.

    Which is correct?

    Thanks.
