I have a pentium IV 1.6 computer with a CD-RW and DVD drives both on the secondary IDE. I removed the CD-RW and installed a DVD-RW dual 8x drive, and some software. Shortly after I installed the DVD-RW the computer runs so slow that after I ran norton anti-virus all night it could not finish the job and stopped. Every program I try to open takes a real long time to open and some will not open. I got 2 warning messages:

Windows has resolved a serious problem

    and

There appears to be a conflict that could be caused by newly installed hardware.

I ran XP RESTORE and got a message it cannot restore to an earliere point.

The screen would not respond to shut down and I had to switch it off.

Other then formatting I do not know what to do next.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks, Jerry

    Hello Jerry,

Does this new Burining DVD software start at bootup? Have you tried disabling it and see how the system runs w/o it? Have you tried disabling programs one at a time, run like like that for awhile, then renabling and diabling another and running, so on, and so on?

You are going to have to be your own diagnostician here.

    Forgot to ask some questions:

Have you used the DVD yet, either as a read only or for burning? You may have a driver issue, do you have the latest driver? The Mfg of the DVD website would probably have info.

If you have not used it, does the DVD look ok in the Device Manager? System > Hardware tab. Right click on the DVD > properties - does it say working ok? There is also Driver info in that dialog box.

    Regards - Charles
