    Hi Al!

I am looking for a simple way to restore my backed up hard drive.
I have an emachine Computer and as you may know it does not come with a copy of XP, but with a restore CD.

Putting that CD in to the drive will wipe out every thing, including partitions.

I would like to make a bootable CD with some back-up/restore software on it (that will work with xp) to give me back what I had without all the junk on the restore CD from emachine.

Is there a way to extract just the backup software from XP?

    Thanks
    Sven Albrecht

    All you need is NTBACKUP.EXE

However, it will not run without the OS...

    Thanks Logik

If I create a startup disk from XP, and then copy NTBackup.exe to the disk, can I do what I want?
I will give that a try.
    Thanks again

    No.

XP (and the NT-family in general) don't create Startup Disks in the same manner that Win9x does, and you cannot run any Windows GUI apps in the Recovery Console.

If you want to restore, you must first install the OS to a different folder, restore everything to the original folders, then boot into the old OS installation point.

    Logik,

    Thanks for the info.

I guess I need a backup software that will work from DOS and is able to read or work with XP.
    Is there such an animal?

    Regards
    Sven

    Thanks to both of you.

    I will check this out.
Q: is there one that is shareware or freeware?

    Regards
    Sven
