Good evening--I ran into a problem with the XP backup Utility not working. I checked the services to make sure that the Volume Shadow Copy was started and on. I done some checking with what might cause something like this to just stop and came up with nothing. The backup about a month ago and it copied (20 gig) the computer but when I wanted to restore it back to the computer about a week ago the program said there was no restore. Thank you if anyone would have any suggestions.

Please post in the correct forum - this is clearly an XP problem - moved.

Are you saying that the restore file was not listed in the Restore dialogue?

Yes PeteC the entry of the back up was in the activity log but when I went to restore this particular back up the computer couldn't acknowledge the restore point. As if it wasn't there in the first place.

By Activity log do you mean the window I posted?

Sorry PeteC for not posting on the correct forum. In answer to your recent question yes I was referring to the media log in the XP backup utility. Thank you for your help. I had several backups in this media storage page but none of them had a restore point.

As I posted I had moved your thread to the Win XP forum - your response in the new thread merged here and the duplicate thread deleted.

I agree with Rockster2U - stick with your other thread until that runs out of steam. Any changes suggested here may well complicate matters.

So everyone is up to speed, Garry emailed me the BootlogXP log and in that email mentioned the problem with using the backup. Below is an excerpt from that.

    Garry,

The backup utility remembers where the backup was originally stored, and may well be looking for the backup file there. You would need to browse to the file in it's new location upon starting the utility to make use of it. As I said in a response email though, please do not make any other changes at this time while we try sorting out the boot issue.

Good Afternoon Noahdfear & PeteC I wanted to give you guys a update on the backup utility. I found out why the XP Backup Utility wasn't recording the files to the media. I went on the web and found that not only the Shadow Volume Copy needed to be enable but along with Web Client, Protected Storage and Removeable Storage also needed to be enabled for the backup to run. That's all is was stupid me never thought there would of been so many services to allow this one program to work properly.

    Thanks for your help

    Garry

Well I'm surprised that the Services were not running by default - who's been fiddling :)
