I've just tried to upgraded to XP Home but after the install the PC stops working with XP warning that it has stopped working to protect the computer with varied non-sensical warnings like "page_equal_or_less-than" The pc has run on Win98SE for over a year and now I've re-installed Win98SE it's running fine.

The Motherbaird is a Gigabyte Socket A GA-7ZXE with a AMD Athlon 1100 processor and Matrox G200 Video Card. I took out all the other cards and it still didn't work.

Has anyone had compatability issues with AMD's?

    Hi dishon!

I´m running AMD and have no problems and haven´t heard of anyone blaming the processor.

Re-install all the hardware and go to Windows XP Upgrade Advisor to check for compatibility of said hardware and the software that is installed.

Check the homepage of the BIOS manufacturer and/or the motherboard manufacturer if a BIOS update is needed/recommended for WinXP.

You can find information on the Gigabyte Socket A GA-7ZXE here .

I wouldn´t opt for the latest beta version of the BIOS.

You either have corrupted system files, or a hardware problem.

    Have you tried an sfc?
    Start > Run > cmd sfc /scannow
    You'll need your XP cd.

If that doesn't work, I'd suspect a memory problem. If you have two sticks, pull one, then the other.

Disconnect everything you can while running diagnostics, especially anything on a usb port. I would only flash the BIOS as a last resort.

When you install XP you need to unplug all your peripherals except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Otherwise it might get messed up.

To add to Shadowhawk's comment, after XP is installed, shut the computer off, plug everything back in and let XP "find" it when you boot. If you have a lot of extras, do each peripheral one at a time, so you can quickly spot and fix any problems.
