    Hi,

I have set-up home networking before, just never with Win 2000 Pro and Win XP Home Edition.

    Computer A
    Running Windows XP w/ SP1
    2 Nic's installed - 1 for internet, 1 for home network

    Computer B
    Running Win 2000 pro

Computer A has IP of 192.168.0.1
Computer B has IP of 192.168.0.2

    Both have TCP/IP
    Both have subnet of 255.255.255.0
Both have File and Printer Sharing
Both have client for Microsoft Networks installed
Both computers have sharing active on at least one folder
Computer A also has QoS Packet Scheduler installed
Computer B has default Gateway of 192.168.0.1 (Computer A's IP Addy)

There are no hardware conflicts on either machine
    (Computers are linked via Hub)
Hub lights are on and all NIC lights are on.

Workgroup name is MSHOME for both computers. Computer A see's Computer B when I view network computers, but can't access the share.

Computer B does not show computer A in the Network.

Both computers are sending packets and both computers are very slowly receiving packets (example, I look for network pc's with in my workgroup from either pc and packets are received at a rate of 1 packet every 3 to 4 seconds)

Here is the ipconfig on each computer:

U didn't said if u had your internet connection shared. either way try defining the ip address of computer B as automatic, if this doesn't work define both computers with automatic ip address. this should work.
if u had your internet connection shared and after doing this it is no more. try, after the network is working, running the ICS wizard of winXP.

    Good Luck...

If you want to network the two PCs for file & printer sharing, do 2 things in addition to what you've already listed.

    - Have manditory login to both with username/password and either use the same login on both or have both user's set up in the local user section on both PCs.

    - Turn on simple file sharing on the XP-home PC.

    Odlink and Newt,

Thanks for both of your posts! I have found the culprit. I had everything configured properly to home network and also share the internet connection on the XP machine, but it didn't work....

Here's why...The 2000 Pro PC was updated from Win 98. No big deal right?!? Well after fooling around with these pc's forever and getting some odd things to happen. Such as One computer could see another. Then after tinkering...the other could see the first but not vice versa....and there was plenty more goofy things happening that I had no rhyme or reason for.

I ran task manager on the Win 2000 pc and noticed something that clicked right away. VSMON.EXE was running!! This app is a part of Zone Alarm (Free Edition). I had Zone Alarm on my Win 98 pc and when I updated to Win 2000, I forgot I had it installed.

Why did I forget? The Zone Alarm icon was not showing up in the Win 2000 taskbar... but it was running the whole time! I'm a Dumb Butt! I removed the app via add/remove and rebooted the pc. Then I direct connected the cable modem to my Win 2000 pc and installed over 100MB's of Service Packs, Critical Updates, Updated Drivers, IE 6, DX 8.1, Antivirus software, etc etc..

I reconnected the modem to my Win XP PC, tested my home network and internet sharing and DRUM ROLL PLEASE - SUCCESS!!

I know have my Network, ICS, and Printer Sharing working!!

And the kicker of it all? I now have Zone Alarm properly configured and installed on both PC's - :D

    Thanks for your posts Guys!!
