The Microsoft patch for the Blaster worm comes in 2 versions: one for XP 64 Bit and a different patch for XP 32 Bit. Is XP Home Edition 64 or 32 Bit? Or can it be either one? Need to download correct patch on diskette for friend whose computer keeps shutting down because of worm.

    Hi

    XP Home is the 32Bit.

64Bit is for the high professional systems.

Right click My Computer, click Properties.
If you have a 64 bit computer, it will say 64 bit on that page.
Also 64 bit is available for Windows XP Pro not Windows XP Home.

Hope this helps & you are able to get the correct patch.

Thanks miniB for clearing of the Bit problem.
    Charles,
My friend seems to think the computer only shuts down within 60 seconds when she's on the Internet so then she should be able to download the patch from the diskette I give her. Have you heard that it shuts down at all other times as well?

    Hi Steelwool,

If you read the article, it says on "some ", the worm will shut down XP whether on-line or not. Your friends case it may not.

Within the article, it also gives instructions to keep the system from shutting within 60 seconds, if that's the case here.

My original point is that the patch is "closing the barn doors.. ", so you are going to have to deal with the worm first, then worry about the patch, which is a preventative, not a fix for the infection.

    Regards - Charles

Thanks for the info Charles. I'll pass the link info on to my friend. I also read at the Symantec site that activating the XP firewall has allowed some to stop the computer from shutting down (but they'll have to know how to enable it real fast before shutdown happens)
