Is there any good reason to pay a bit more for a 1.8GHz Xeon over a 1.8GHz P4? Any good reason not to? Are there other cost factors involved? In addition to the 'usual' stuff I use top of the line photo and graphics programs. Thanks, Craig

I think you will find an Athlon XP 2200+ makes this a non question question. For that matter, so will a 1900+, a 2000+ or a 2100+. And, if you have a hang up about server chips AKA Xeon, then take a look at the Athlon MP. You'll do much better with an Athlon than a P4 in terms of overall performance and bang for your buck.

    Amen to that Rockster.
    Don't buy intel, or Dells.
Unless you enjoy paying more for less

I have seen the light....bidding on a XP2200 today. After all, sometimes more is less.

You should be able to buy an OEM tray version of this for $214 but if you wait another week or two when the 2400+ and 2600+ hit the street you'll probably do even better. The big thing is make sure you buy a fan/heatsink that is 2200+ approved. You won't be disappointed with AMD - they run circles around P4's for a fraction of the cost.

    Xeons

They require special boards & BIOS - too exotic for me.

While they ARE faster for Multi-CPU Server and CAD workstations the performance per dollar is not justified for most non-corporate users. - Its like SCSI, 2x the performance for 8x the cost...

( if some else were to buy me one... I wouldn't complain.)
