Anyone ever fool with these things? They only have 256 MB flash memory and the version of XP is very limitied but if you plug a USB thumbdrive in it you can expand it that way. The internal flash memory is partioned into (C and Z) drive. The Z drive is 16MB and stores the local settings and temporary internet files.

Some programs (like an old version of Winamp, Limewire, etc.) I've managed to just drag the folder from my main PC over to my Wyse terminal's thumbdrive, copy a few missing drivers into the System 32 folder that pop up and they work that way. Other programs require a fresh installation.

The trouble is programs that require installation hits a snag. Most of the time when you start an installation program it wants to dump the contents onto the flash memory (C and sometimes Z) rather than giving you the option of where you want to store it. Of course there is not enough space on the flash memory.

Is there anyway to change a setting somewhere so when I run an installation program it will install the folder onto the thumdrive (D).

Yes there is. You have to redirect the TMP and TEMP variables from the Z:\TMP and Z:\TEMP to the D:\TMP and D:\TEMP directories.
You can do this by going to
Control Panel > System > Advanced Tab > Environment Variables > User Variables
    and edit the two variables.
This will copy all the temporary files to your thumbdrive and should allow you to install the application to your thumbdrive.
