Everytime I start my computer, I get an error message that the program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. Details reveal that WTOOLSA caused an invalid page fault in module KKERNEL32.DLL . How do I get rid of this?

    Welcome kandjmom

    Suggest you do the following:

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot (v1.3), Ad-aware (build 6.181) and HijackThis. All are free and available bellow.

Download Spybot, install, update and run Spybot. Delete all it finds that is prechecked. Then download Ad-aware, install, update and configure Ad-aware for a custom full scan and run, deleting all it finds. http://www.lavahelp.com/howto/fullscan/index.html

Download HijackThis from link in my signature. Save it to a permanent folder (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT). Open and hit scan, then save log. Once it is saved it will open in notepad. Select all from the edit button, copy and paste the results here.
Don't fix anything with it yet! Someone experienced with the logs will advise you.

I moved this over to Security.
You should try uninstall Wintools first and reboot, it will not go away completely with the uninstall, but this recommended as the first step. Then use the tools as suggested by LDTate, as you have more things other than WinTools.

Download CWShredder from the link in my signature. Save it to the desktop.

    Download and install RegSeeker.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WINTOOLS\WTOOLSB.DLL (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QTTASK.EXE" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [WinTools] C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the General tab click the advanced button. Check the box to 'enable start menu' and OK out. Restart and choose safe mode.

You will need to show hidden files and folders.

    Open CWShredder and click fix.
Open C:\Program Files\Common files and delete the folder WinTools.
Open C:\Temp (if present), select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Applog, select all and delete.
Open RegSeeker. Click find in registry and search the entire registry for WinTools and WTools. Delete all.
Open Ad-aware and run. Delete all it finds.
Open My Computer and right click Local Disk C:, then choose disk cleanup. Check all except compress old files and OK.
Uncheck the box to 'enable start menu' in msconfig and OK out. Reboot.

Back in Windows, run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

    wtoolsa fix

I ran through the procedure, and cant seem to copy HijackThis scan log because it wants to save as an Adobe Acrobat document and then cant read it.
I also had a message at reboot that the DOS system file was not found and what did I want to do
Accept- Iknow why it is changed and i wish to save
    Ignore- keep old settings
Quit-quit and verify why it changed
    I chose Ignore.

Hmmm......after clicking save log, when the save dialog box comes up, type in scan.txt and select All Files (*.*) as the Save as type.

    Looks clean. Everything working OK?

Open Spybot and click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it. Click the link below that for SpywareBlaster, download, install and update. Check for updates weekly.
    Then download and install IESpyads.

That will give you an added layer of protection against unwanted parasites. :)

    Hi kandjmom...

It sounds like you accidently associated *.log files with Adobe Reader...here are a couple methods to reassociate *.log back to Notepad.

    Method #1:
    1) While holding down shift key right-click on any *.log file
    2) Select "Open With" from the menu list
    3) In the "Open With" dialog box choose Notepad from the list
    4) Make sure "Always Use This Program to Open This Type of File" is checked off
    5) Click OK.

Method #2: If you have WinXP this works real well...
    1) Double-Click "My Computer "
    2) Select "View "
    3) Select "Folder Options "
    4) In the "Folder Options" window click on "File Types" tab
    5) Scroll down the "Registered file types" list and click on "LOG"
    6) Under "Details for "LOG" Extension section click the "Change" button
    7) This will take you to the "Open With" dialog box. Choose Notepad from the list
    8) Make sure "Always Use This Program to Open This Type of File" is checked off
    9) Click OK to close the "Open With" window then click OK to close the "Folder Options" window

Yes the system is much better now and I appreciate all the help. I got the notepad working too. The last question I have is that when I reboot, I still get the DOS system file is not found. I have been clicking I for ignore, keep old settings. Should I instead click A for accept, I know why settings have changed and wish to keep them?
