I installed a different HDD then I performed a custom install from a windows 8 pro 64bit upgrade disc. The drive I used was erased with Drive eRazer Ultra and is a WD7500BPKT. The OS installs fine with product key but when I tried to activate the OS. I get instructed to re-enter the correct product key. Why would it work while installing the OS then not let me Activate or install updates.

"Upgrade" discs generally look for a qualifying OS to be on the drive so that it can upgrade it.

When I install the OS It accepts the product key or it wouldn't allow me to continue. As a test I typed in the wrong product key during installation and the Next button remained greyed out until I typed it correctly then it allowed me to continue.

Yes, you have a valid product key to do an upgrade. All you need to do is install XP or Vista - register it - then upgrade it.

That or purchase a Full Install Key Code.

Thank you everyone who responded. Arie's suggestion solved the problem. I kept right clicking on command prompt waiting for a context menu but I did not bother to look at the bottom of the screen so I could click on Run as Administrator. Talk about having tunnel vision.

No problem. I appreciate all the help I receive on this forum. The least I can do is mark this thread Resolved. So others aren't wasting their time.
