A couple of days ago when I start up my computer,
I saw all my icons who were different :(
for example: there used to be an > arrow after programs (documents, etc.) in the start menu,
but now I see a computermouse-icon instead of the > icon.
I have this with every option that contains a sub-menu.
Other things are: when I check something, I used to have a checkmark, but now I have a strange wave-icon.
All the new icons look like the wingding-icons

    plz help me,
    GaVeRaMoN

Hi - Welcome to the Board :)

A couple of ways to go :

Look here under i = icons repair view
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm
or alternatively download Tweakui from here
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...c8-8b63-4c03-8986-d7f45a6aa1fa&DisplayLang=en
and use the Repair function - rebuild icons.

It is possible that you have a virus or spyware which is causing this problem so update your virus definitions and run a full virus check, then run Spybot and AdAware - update their reference files before running - run both and run Spybot before AdAware

Very strange - have you loaded any new software in the last few days?

Try running System File Checker .........
    Start > Run sfc /scannow

If you have a System Restore point before the problem occurred try restoring to that point.

I'd like to resurrect this thread, as I have recently fallen victim to the exact same problem posted at the top. My screen even looks the same as the shot above, with mouse icons where arrows should be and other oddities. Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated. Quite frankly, I'm stumped.

I don't know if this applies in XP, but in Win95 I got problems kinda like this after I deleted the MARLETT.TTF font, which was a system font necessary to display some menu symbles. Did any of you delete any fonts?

Did you try the suggestions PeteC made to the original poster? They may well help even though gaveramon evidently couldn't be bothered to post back with his/her results.

This sometimes happens to me too, but only when I mess around and change themes, then change them back.

    What I do to get all my icons back to normal is install this;

    http://www.stardock.com/products/iconpackager/

Its called Icon Packager and basically theres lots of different types of icons to set as all your default ones.

If I set a theme, change it and it mucks my icons all up, I open this program, choose 'set default icons' and everything returns to normal.

The programs compatible with 98, ME, 2000 & XP so give it a go.

    Good luck. :)

Thanks for all the help. It appears that the Marlett font has indeed gone AWOL, so I'm going to transfer the font from another XP computer. Finally, a resolution!
