    Hello

This afternoon, Windows 98 keeps displaying an error message: `Can't write to Drive C. Some files or data may be lost'. I click off the message and Windows seems to be operating normally.

Norton did a complete scan for viruses in the early hours of this morning and came up clean. Ad-Aware reports NO pirate ware.

Last night, I did, however, try to install an old program to D Drive which places files into the Windows system folder on C drive and when the program wouldn't work properly, I uninstalled it a couple of times. I'm wondering if in the latter process, a DLL file was lost and if so, how does one track it down? Windows help does not offer any solution.

This latter said, I am not sure that last night's activity is the cause since this write error appeared only this afternoon. No sign of it overnight nor all this morning.

Firewall [Zone Alarm's latest] is set to High Security and when the Write Error first appeared, Zone Alarm's `Internet Lock' was enabled.

Can anybody give me guidance please?

    Thank you.

This may, or may not apply to you, but, are you deleting your Temporary Internet Files regularly? If too many files get built up in the folder, you will get those types of errors.

If you still have questions, don't hesitate to come back.

It may be a sign of falling HD.
First thing to do, run full scandisk (full = including surface scan).
I would also open the case, and check if all fans are running, and for lose cables (with power off, unplug each one, and plug them back in).
You may also go Start>Run, type: SFC to see if your system files are in tact.

Thanks fellows for your responses. I must make this quick as my problems persist. I think it one of three things: failing hard drive, boot problem or Norton 2003. Surprisingly, I've also got an `Invalid System Disk' message [once only] when booting up but the computer always goes into Scan Disk mode when starting up and then kicks over into full surface scan mode ex DOS. I can stop that and Windows will load.

Now here's something that's either a coincidence or has meaning. When I remove Norton Anti-Virus, I have way less write errors. Also, after full surface scan runs with fix disk enabled, it reports `0' [that's ZERO] back clusters and windows is fine for about 12-24 hours.

Temp Internet files are not a problem. I run Disk Clean and
MRU Blaster every night. My system scans free of viruses and Ad Aware still reports NO undesireable files.

I tend to rule out a corrupt boot file since - touch wood - I always can load windows one way or another. Hope I can get the machine in on Monday. The HD is only two years old.

    Sorry for delaying my response.

I would definitelly back up your data (just to be an a safe side), go to your HD manufacturer site, and get their HD test utility (usually it's free). Run it. Seems to me like there is something wrong with your HD, or it'll be in a near future.

    HD -Write Errors

Broni, you were absolutely right. It was my hard drive. My computer store technican hopes told me to not start up my computer and he will attempt to do copy disk to a new hard drive.

Drive is not yet down but scan disk can no longer operate. Disk is only two years old. Apparently I have a hope the store can successfully copy my none-backed up files, many irreplaceable - yes I'm guilty [my former CD-RW drive read head failed and then I got a new drive and I missed catching up my backups by one day. I planned to do it all on Saturday/Sunday. ] I also have a tape drive but didn't have a new tape!

Just hope it's not a hard lesson learned. What really is annoying is that I personally must return the hard drive to get a replacement AFTER I have bought a new one...or do without my system for days.

Anyway, just wanted to give you an update.

    Thanks

Things like this happen. My sis computer was also only two years old. I was downloading something for her, but since she is on dial-up, we just took off to play some pool, and let the download running. We came back some time later....black screen...dead HD, as I found later. At least, you had some warning. Her data was just lost.
