Yes there is still life for your old pent. 166. My first Linux box was a pent.166Mhz non-MMX 16Mb ram 3 gig harddrive system. There are a number of uses for your old PC. One site I found useful to me is: http://www.linuxquestions.org/ do some searching there for some ideas. Once you decide what you are going to do then you need to get a Linux distro some are designed for general use and some are designed for a specific use such as a router. Happy hunting

Let us know how it goes. I have got another idea for you it's one I'm considering myself, build a standalone MP3 player out of it you know just the tower, speakers, a small LCD to tell you what track its on, and some kind of a remote. check out this page: http://www.masterc.no-ip.org/old/Projects/Mp3MobilePuter.html there are so many ideas just find something that interrests you and do it I just wish I had time to do half the stuff I want.

like to recycle an old box

    hi all,

i have an old box i got from a former roomate when they bought a new one and i was wondering if i could use it as a file server or external drive.

it'a dog, as i understand, it's a compaq presario 5000 series, 633 cleleron, 64 Mb RAM, 15 Gb HDD, CD-ROM and LAN card, running winME (not sure which version, as i have not done anything with it as yet).

i read the above article, posted by stever r jones, and this sounds like a feasable option to keep from adding to the local landfill. my question(s) then, assuming the HD isn't shot, would be could i reformat the HD and reinstall the OS in a minimized form, drop in a new larger secondary HD and max out the ram to use this box as a file server for a home LAN?

and if this sound feasable, am i missing anything or would there be any obvious problems i'm just not seeing? i realize that the mobo may not be able to handle another HD, but the original documentation includes instructions for adding a second HD; also i've considered the need for an additional fan and i'm not sure if there is room for one.

Is there still life for a P166? You bet there is! My ISP's secondary name server is a P90 with 64 megs running Linux. They installed it around 1996 and it's still going strong. If that lower system can still serve a local ISP, a P166 will certainly work for you. :)
