Have been using NS 4.5 (& Windows 98)for a few years with very few problems. I'm a very basic user- maybe 30 emails/day, retaining none in files. Wondering whether to upgrade. So often, it seems, life gets more complex with software upgrades. True in this case, or is a newer version of Netscape really worthwhile?

    jim,

There have been quite a few significant improvements in Netscape, since Ver. 4.5. One of the most significant would be:

    128-bit Encryption
beginning with version 4.75, Communicator is not subject to the Brown Orifice security vulnerability.

There have also been security fixes in JavaScript beginning with Ver. 4.7.

    Another excellent addition:
All platforms: Communicator allows you to expunge all mail folders and subfolders (for both IMAP and POP mail servers) whenever you quit the program.

Newer versions of RealPlayer, AIM, WinAmp, Java, etc.

Of course with every improvement, new bugs appear! ;)

Why don't you check out the Release Notes beginning with Ver. 4.7, and see the "What's New" section. If you do decide to upgrade, I would recommend Ver. 4.79.

To see the Release Notes for Ver. 4.72-79, just add the second digit to the above link:

I'd agree with Ramona... it's definitely worth considering an upgrade.

I'm still running NS4.76... it's been stable for me... but have been hearing good things about NS4.79 too.

If I remember right... it's been alwhile since I ran NS4.5... but it had it's share of bugs. But sometimes you find an improvement that is "just" what you were looking for. For eg. in the Mac version of Netscape, one was never able to put a folder full of bookmarks on the personal toolbar until v4.76 and they much improved the support for java applets.
