I have two computer on a LAN. They are both part of a workgroup with the same name. I am trying to copy some of the user profiles from computer 1 to computer 2. I have a admin account on both computers that is the same name. I have tried to map the C$ share from computer 2 to computer 1 with no success. I did this using the net use command. I can map the admin$ and have done so. Then I go to the Advanced tab under System properties, then setting on the user profiles area. I then go to the "copy to" option and browse out the the share on computer 2. It is at this point that I run into trouble. When I drill down to the share on computer 2 the \\computer name\Guest account pops up asking for a password, I have the guest account disabled, as it doesn't get used. So what am I doing wrong? In a domain this a snap, but in a workgroup it is anything but a snap.

I don't think you can do what you are trying to do on a peer to peer network.

When Windows is in peer to peer mode, each PC maintains its own database of users. As with every Windows user database, the SID (security identifier) is king; user name is just a label. So two accounts on two computers can have the same account name, but the users will be different because the SIDs will be different. So when you are on one computer logged in with a particular account, you will get no special privileges on a second PC even though that PC has an account of the same name - its a different user as the SID is different.

Moving an account from one PC to another will cause problems because the SIDs will belong to different databases and there is the potential for all sorts of clashes and misalignments of the user database.

On a domain, there is a central user database. So moving domain user accounts from PC to PC is no problem because there is only one user database.

So, I am pretty sure you can't do what you want to do the way you are trying to do it. Or if you do, you'll get all sorts of unexpected behaviour.

Therefore, I'd recommend that you try using the "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" and use that to migrate settings from one user on a PC to another user on another PC.
