I am having trouble with my Win2000 Professional accessing
a folder on my win98 laptop. It tells me I don't have access.

I set the access as "share Level ". Should I be using "user? "

If so, how do I set the authenticator, as domain or server?

Also, when I try to set it as user it says it can't find the workgroup and its list of users on the network.

I would appreciate any help on this. I am achieving success little by little.

Did you give your laptop a name in the identification tab settings
    and enter your workgroup name???

    Network properties\identification tab

    Did you enable file sharing??

    Network properities\file and print sharing.

W2K isn't really designed for workgroup use. Domain and AD are more natural for it.

I have best luck with workgroups if I put each user account in on all workgroup PCs. Exact same name, pwd, etc.

Also, you said "how do I set the authenticator, as domain or server" and from what I read, you aren't using either a domain or a server.

As for the "set the authenticator ", afraid I'm really not sure what you are speaking of there. But if you can hum a few bars, I will try to pick up the melody.

Newt, now I am really confused. I was told that you couldn't set a domain with Win2kProfessional ... that workgroup was the only option. I don't have a server ... so how can it be anything other than a workgroup? The access song that you can't hum, is found by going to control panel, network, access tab .. then you choose either share or user control.

How do I name a domain in Win2kProfessional? So far, nobody has been able to tell me.

I have a simple workgroup connection between my Win2kPro
and my Win98 Laptop. No server. So I can't have a network or a domain, right?????

    Please advise.

The authenticator comes up when I choose user as my access rather than share.

Sorry for the delay Wiry. I haven't been on here for a few days.

Probably just as well with the delay though since I had mis-understood your issue earlier but think I see it now.

I was assuming the dialogs and tabs you spoke of were from the 2KPro machine. They would be really strange from there. Been so long since I networked a 9x PC in a workgroup enviornment I'd forgotten some of the options you had with them.

You can certainly have a network.

With a workgroup, you will do better using the Win98 "share" option rather than "user ". Do make sure all your PCs are in the same workgroup too. And I would strongly suggest you use NetBeui on all the PCs. You can use TCP/IP too if you want but it is certainly more complicated to set up and not a bit better for a small home network.

And you were absolutely correct that a 2KPro system cannot act as a domain controller. You must have an NT/2K server (or possibly XP - not sure) to set up a domain. For your situation, workgroup is probably more suitable anyway.

However, 2K systems really have trouble with understanding a workgroup - but they can be made to deal with it.

I think if you add each user account & password on each PC, your problem will go away and you will connect up just fine. Make sure the account name and password are EXACTLY the same on all PCs though.

If this does not work (although I think it will) post back. I will keep trying to get an answer and if I get stuck, hopefully someone else will jump in.

Thanks, Newt. I haven't added all the users to the win98 profile but will do so. I really appreciate your help. There are so many options ... so little time.

I like figuring it out. Am gradually getting there. I want to add two more computers but will get this right first.
