I am having problems launching word. The program hangs and I eventually have to re-boot my pc. I am running Windows ME. I have thought about de-installing the work and Microsoft works suite and installing Office 2000. Has anyone had these types of issues with Word 2000 with ME?

Have you tried doing a repair of the app? I haven't used Works for lots of years and can't even swear it has 'repair' as an option but a check in add/remove should tell you.

Otherwise a reinstall or remove and load Office sounds like the best bet.

Do you run Norton? There was a problem with the Verisign servers after a Jan 7 update which caused MS apps to hang. Do a search on the board for the relevant threads.

Fixing Word's hanging when trying to open is almost always fixed by searching the harddrive for the file, normal.dot, and deleting it. Word will create a new one the next time it's opened.

Repairing Word, or even uninstalling and reinstalling it doesn't affect normal.dot since it's not a part of the installation. It's created the first time Word is started up.

To find normal.dot, you do need to check in My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View tab that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. If it's not, check it, click OK.
