I had several templates made out for Word documents. I went to use one of them the other day and the template came up dark. No text or graphics, just a dark screen. When I do a search for the template and click on the file, it opens correctly, but when I click "New Document" and try to open it from there it does not open right.

Open one of the templates through Windows Explorer as you have already done, save it under another name and see if it opens via File > New.

If this doesn't solve the problem search for normal.dot and delete it - Word will recreate it the next time it is opened.

If all else fails try a repair of Word, either through Add/Remove Programs > Word?Office > Change and select the Repair function or go Help > Detect and Repair in Word itself.

Saving the doc as a new dot file did not work. It will open OK if you click on New Document on the right hand task bar but not from the New Document link in the start menu.

I deleted the normal.dot file and the templates opened correctly but, normal.dot did not regenerate. It is no longer in my templates even after rebooting and starting Word.

If you can click to open a new document and have a new document open, you have normal.dot there somewhere.

Try saving a new, blank document as a document template named Normal. My guess is you will get an error about using the name of an open file.

You are right, it flagged me. When I do a search for it, it won't show up, and I do have the computer set up to show hidden files.

    The path is ....

C:\Documents and Settings\PeteC\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dot - substituting your user name for PeteC

Glad to hear that the problem is sorted.

Followed the path and it is not showing up there.

Thanks for the help though, as long as it works it's OK with me. :D
