Windows 98SE. On start up this morning there was an error message I did not note but it was something about install. The start up was unusual and icons were missing from task bar. I then found Word was missing from Programs. I got the error message 'Windows Installer failed to in stall the program (Word) associated with this file. Please contact your system administrator ". Internet Explorer did not launch as normal but Firefox and Netscape are ok.

I have now ascertained that Power Management settings have been changed. I have restarted twice without any change to what has happened. Should I take a disk backup then re-install Windows 98SE or is there a simpler way of getting Word installed?

It appears that Office, so Word, are not on the Windows 98SE CD. a check on Office says that Office 97 Professional CD is needed to set up Word. I do not have that CD as Word was installed when I received the computer. I have been using Word 2000 in writing a book. I have Word 97 on another computer. Could I use that without too many problems?

Microsoft technical support have advised me that the problem suggests corrupted files. They have advised me to uninstall Office 2000 Professional using
Add/Remove on the Control panel. Then install it using the CD. I post this in case others have a similar problem.
