Firstly I am running Windows XP with service pack 2 and WORD XP.

Every time I open an existing word document (either files created by myself or documents I have downloaded) when I CLOSE the document WORD asks me if I want to save the document even though I have made no changes, in fact even when I have done nothing more than open the document, read it, close it even without scrolling through the document.
I'm sure it never used to do this.
I would expect WORD only to ask me if I want to save if I have made a change.
    Thanks

If you save it - close it - reopen and close again - do you get prompted to save again?

Could be that you at an @today'sdate type setting in the doc....

If I open the document, close it then open again and close I get "do you want to save" BOTH times.
I don't have automatic date change set.

I have just performed a test removing parts of a document line by line until WORD stopped asking do I want to save.
The following will ask me if I want to save (wish I could attach the files) -

    POSSIBLE ITINERARIES Ireland

    Arrive 9 September
    Depart 16 September
    7 Nights "“ 6.5 days

    Possibilities
Derry 3 nights "“ two full days "“ 1 day to Giants Causeway etc
Donegal or similar 2 nights "“ 1 full day
    Belfast 2 nights - 1 full day

If I remove the LAST line (ie Belfast 2 nights - 1 full day), SAVE, reOPEN and exit WORD does NOT ask me if I want to save. I cannot see any reason why the last line makes a difference.

    CRAZY eh?

    Thanks Steve,

WORD didn't seem to display this (do you want to save) in the past but maybe it did.

Anyway I used the Microsoft support document and now it behaves as I prefer.
