For no apparent reason, MS Word 2010 has changed the size of a letter to 7 "x 9 ". It is showing the size in page layout to be 8 1/2" x 11 ", but on screen it is 7" x 9 ". Can you help me reset it? Nothing I have found online has been helpful..

I have tried to do a system restore only to find that some how there is only one restore point and it failed to restore. (That is my next crisis to work on.)
    Thanks for all you do!

I rather doubt that Malware is an issue here - FYI malware logs should only be posted in the Malware & Virus Removal Forum - logs removed from your post.

I suggest that with Word closed you delete normal.dotm which should be located .....

    C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dotm

It will be recreated the nest time you start Word. See if that resolves the issue.

Deleted that file, but did not change the size of letter. Still 7x9. I noticed that this file also had an "!" over it. Does that change anything?

Not sure if this is significant or not, but old saved files with word open just fine with letter size. It seems to be only new files that I start.

I can't say that I have ever seen that on a file before - in, say, Device Manager it indicates an issue of some sort.
Saved files will have data regarding paper size, margins, fonts, formatting etc. embedded in them so that is to be expected.

Would you please clarify how you are determining that the size on screen is 7 "x9" - if you are referencing the text width using the ruler I wonder if the default margin has been changed. Another possibility is the view zoom setting.

If you print out the document on Letter Paper is it sized correctly?

Have you considered a Repair of Word?

I thought that the "!" was unusual, too.

I did do a repair but am still showing a 7x9 inch page. This is on the window showing the ruler. I have tried changing the margins and the zoom is showing the entire page (7x9).

On screen, the writing is at the very top of the page with no header or footer room, so it must have something to do with the view. When I go to print, it shows an 8 1/2 x 11 page.

As you may have guessed I am clutching at straws here with no definitive answers for you and I am using Word 2007 :)
You may have the 'Show white areas between pages' disabled. Move the cursor to the top edge of the page where it will change to a square with two opposing arrows pointing to a horizontal centre line with the tool tip ' Double-click to show white space'. On double clicking the text should move down to show the top margin white space.

I am still not 100% certain of exactly how you are determining that a 7x9 page is shown - that does not appear to be a standard paper size. Attached below is a snip from my copy of Word in Print Layout View with measurements set to inches and Letter paper selected.

Can you send me an equivalent snip from your screen and also of the entry in Windows Explorer showing normal.dotm with the ! mark.

I will PM you with an email address.

    Screenshots requested posted below (cropped)

'Show white areas between pages' was disabled - fixed.

I have no idea what the ! mark on normal.dotm implies although I find that I have the same marking on my Normalemail template.

7x9 paper size is a result of Microsoft's idiotic method of calibrating the ruler ....

0 (zero) is at the inner edge of the left hand margin and the paper edge is effectively -1. Same applies to the top margin.

With the white areas showing the paper shown on screen is actually the 8 ½" x 11" letter - see annotated screenshot below.

Does it not indicate that some Macro or script is contained, At least that's what it reminds me of... especially with the parchment-type background...
