I am having such trouble with the page numbering on my book file with about 230 pages. I have divided the file into 20 some sections. And carefully numbered the pages in each section using configuration in "insert page number" and choosing the proper placement of the number in the footer. But the numbers I give don't match with the numbers shown on the tool bar at the bottom of the screen. I made a pdf file out of this file and I found that the Word left in blank pages where additional pages are supposed to be (which I don't have in my book) to explain the inconsistencies. I don't want those blank pages because that would change the odd and even pages sequencing for numbering. I am wondering if there is a clear and consistent solution to the problem.

    I would appreciate some help.

Hi, Have you had a look in Word 2007 Help? Open MS Office > Word > Insert > hover mouse over Page Number > Press F1.
There is a lot of info available in there. Neil.

    Thanks for your response.

The problem was complex. I suspected that the problem was with the sections being set up for odd page and even page sections for the purposes of putting up headers differently on even and odd pages. I started looking in that area.

I read elsewhere on the web that even page sections may be causing the problem and making them continuous is essentially the solution to what I found to be the problem. After a lot of tweaking (sometimes using both 'continuous' and 'next page' sections, I was able to get the number on each page match the page number on the tool bar. First I made the page numbers worked ok. And then I put in even page headers on even pages in each chapter or section and odd page headers on odd pages in each section. That took care of the problem.

    Thanks again for your help.
