Since Word 2000 is slowly phasing out, should I replace it with Word 2002 which I have in the Works Suite, or get the latest version (as a stand alone - I don't want the whole Office Suite)?

What are the changes, and are any of them major?

    If it ain't broke don't fix it:eek:

There is also Word 2003 and 2007. If you're going to upgrade, go all the way to 2007.

That's part of the problem - it ain't really broke, but on the other hand, it ain't really in the greatest shape. Also, I notice that when I try to identify the version (Help>About) it lists 2000, even though Add/Remove Programs lists 2002, which is what came with my Works Suite 2006.

So my feeling is that if there are serious differences between 2000 (or 2002) and 2007, I should probably consider 2007. What are the major differences? I'll see what the Microsoft Update site has to say, but an outside opinion is always helpful.

Unless you want to make a quantum leap stick with 2000/2003 - interfaces are essentially the same and for general use you probably would not notice any difference. Word 2007 is a different kettle of fish - the user interface (screenshot) has been changed out of all recognition and is supposedly easier to use - pure hype IMO and the basic file format has been changed too. *.doc files from earlier versions of Word open in Compatability mode and can be worked on as before. However docs produced in 2007 cannot be read in lesser versions unless specifically saved for those versions. There is a converter available from MS for 2003 certainly, not sure how far it goes back, to enable, say, 2003 to deal with the new format of 2007 files.

Echo Steve's comment "If it ain't broke don't fix it" - I have both - on different PC's, but the main desktop runs Office 2003.

It doesn't sound as though I would benefit particularly from $200 worth of MS bells and whistles. I use Word extensively, but simply, and have never found it difficult to use, I think I'll just try reinstalling 2002, from the Works Suite 2006 CD, so I don't have to worry about buying something "easier ".

Thank you both very much; your advice was really helpful - not to mention maybe saving me a bunch of money.
