Dell Dimension 2100 W/256 MB Ram. OS Windows ME.
For some time I have had Microsoft Word 2000 acting (in my opinion) very strangely. It requires a very long time to load the Normal Template and then to open a document.
The strangest thing of all is that ccSetMgr.exe must be checked in the Startup in the System Configuration Utility. It is my understanding that this is a Setup for Norton Anti-Virus so I do not get the relationship.
The only time that I get an acceptable action is after I have deleted the Normal.dot at it's home at computer/c:/Windows/App Data/Microsoft/Templates, then it opens instantly. (ONCE)
I have reinstalled Word and replaced the Normal Template but it does not help.
I believe that this problem started after I had uninstalled and deleted some programs that I no longer use. Could I have deleted a shared file that caused this? Respectfully: Les Bamburg (aka oldcousin)

I am running Norton 2005 A/V. I have recieved no error messages.

Hello Les, I think what is happening is that your AV - Norton - is scanning Word and word documents on startup of word. You can turn this function off in Options in Norton. I am not sure exactly where (have forgotten) as I no longer have Norton AV. Look in your AV under options and see if there is a line that say's something like "Microsoft Office Scan... ". If so uncheck the box next to it and see if your word program and documents open faster.

Hello Les, I got your PM and I will post your comments here so perhaps you can get some more help.

Les replied: "Thank you for your response:
I am running Norton 2005 AV and it does not have the feature that you mentioned. Most of the articles having to do with this problem seems to be mostly concerned with Norton's Office Installations. However I did disable the Autoprotect and had this result: The first three loadings of the Normal Template were immediate but were in a minimized window as if they were loading from a different source. After that Word returned to her old delaying tactics.
    Respectfully: Les Bamburg. "

Did you click on the link provided by markp62 in the previous post? Lots of help on disabling the Norton Office Plug-in.

Have a look in your Norton AV as follows:

Disable the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in. To do this, follow these steps. Warning This workaround may make a computer or a network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.

    1. On the taskbar, right-click the Norton icon, and then click Norton AntiVirus Options.
    2. Click Miscellaneous.
    3. Click to clear the Turn Office Plug-in on check box.

I am pretty sure your Norton AV should have the option to turn off the Office Plugin.

    Conclusion to Word 2000 Mystery.
The problem is caused by Norton AV pre-scan of files causing a delayed opening.
The problem was solved by going to AV options/misc and unchecking Office Plug-Ins. Since I don't run a network I am sure this will not put my virus protection at risk to any degree. Les Bamburg.

Hi Les, glad to hear the issue is resolved. You shouldn't have too many concerns regarding Office documents, just be sure you run a manual scan, before opening, on any that you download or bring onto your system from an outside source via e-mail, disk or CD. Your AV will most likely scan any e-mail sent files in any case.

Just because the Office scan is turned off, doesn't mean your AV is not going to pick up any infected files. It is just another layer of protection that as you know can have some unwanted side effects.
