I have just converted a Pdf file to Word 2000 document using conversion software.
I appear to be able to change the physical appearance of the fonts by selecting a different style, but the style-box window is still telling me that the style is always "Normal" rather than the style that I have selected.
I have spent over an hour lining up the converted text over about 40 pages, (so it was still a lot quicker than typing it!) and therefore do not really want to have to start over with another conversion, but it was only when coming to insert the Contents page that I noticed the problem with the Styles box.
The curious thing is that the style will actually change as directed, and the range of available syles is there in the drop-down menu box, but the box still indicates "Normal" as the selected style even though it isn't. Is there some locking mechanism within Word that is preventing the style selection from acting properly?

There are a number of options in Word's help files.

First, you have to select the entire document in order to change the style for the whole thing. The easiest way to do that is, with the document open in Word, press the Ctrl/a key combination. Then select a different style and see if it applies the change to the entire document.

If that doesn't do it, try using the "Format Painter." Instructions are in Word's help files.

I tried the blanket formatting idea but on selecting the entire document there appeared to be nothing registered in the format style box: selecting a style imposes that style but the style window remains blank as if nothing had been selected.
Format painter just sees "Normal" as the only style, so there's no other style to copy.

First, make sure you have the document saved and to be doubly sure, save another copy in another location. That way, if you make a mistake and really mess things up, you'll have another copy intact to try again.

Then go ahead and perform the first method you said you tried...the blanket formatting with nothing appearing in the Style box. Then save the results...maybe give it a new name so if it's not right, you'll know which copy to delete...and close Word.

Then re-open the document and see if things are the way you want them.

    Hi Miz.
Thanks for the suggestion, but the problem is not that I can't change fonts or even styles. The problem is that whatever style is selected is always showing as "Normal" in the Style window.
For example, I choose "Heading 1" which gives me Arial 16 point, and that's the font I see and get on screen and paper, but in the style-window on the left it's still reading "Normal" even though the text has altered to "Heading 1 "'s attributes. ( "Normal "'s font is Times New Roman 12-point)

I have to say that this is not a serious problem as it only removes the ability to create a Table of Contents, which, by its very nature, needs more than one style in order to pinpoint Chapter headings etc.. I'm just curious as to why this is happening and to know if there's an option deeply buried somewhere in Word 2000 that will enable me to "unlock" it and fix this strange quirk.
