    98SE is the OS

Media Player 9 is giving me a problem. At least I think it is WMP.

When I try to play a .MID file I get no Sound but the Slide at the botom shows it playing.

I open the Volumne Control and I see the SB Synth slider all the way to the Bottom. I slide it up and hear the music.

But when I select another .MID file it goes back to the bottom again.

I am using onboard AC97 Audio. All other sound seem to be OK.

No indication of problems show up in Device Manager or anywhere.

Is this an association problem or am I missing something ?

Try this. When you first open a midi file, instead of using the volume control applet to turn the volume up, use the volume control in Media Player. Slide it all the way up (if it isn't already). If the volume increases using it, leave it all the way up and then close MP and try opening another midi file and see if the volume is still up.

This is what sounds like is happening. If you pay attention to the volume control in MP when you use the volume control applet to increase the midi volume you'll see that the control in MP doesn't go up or down as you increase or decrease the volume. If the volume control in MP is set to low and you use the other one to increase the volume, the MP one will stay on low. If you increase the volume using the MP control you'll notice that the control in the volume control applet slides up and down as you move the MP one up and down.

If your MP volume control should happen to be set on low and you use the other one to increase the volume, after you close MP, the next time you open a midi file with MP it'll once again be set to low because of where the MP control was set when you closed it. If you use the MP control to raise the volume and leave the control in MP up when you close it, it should hold for you and the next time you open a midi the volume should be where it was the last time you used it.

Maybe this isn't what's happening on yours but this is the way it works for me. Check it out and see if maybe this is the problem.

    Thank you Zander

I most certainly give it a go when I can get to the machine.

Plus I just got a call from my Daughter inviting me to go with her to Glouscter, Mass to see my Son.

:) :) I AM GOING :) :) So the PC will be taking a step back WAY BACK for a few days.

So if you do not hear back from me before Tuesday you will know why.

On further checking, setting MP to MUTE put the SB Synth In the Volumne control Panel AT THE BOTTOM
