Resolved WMI Usage running at 60% Spiking to 100%

    My WMI Provider Host runs at about 60% CPU usage and will spike to 100% when I do things like opening Google Chrome. I find I have trouble running games (nothing fancy game wise just some MSN games) I usually have nothing else running during these events.

    Can this be right? :confused: Any thoughts?

    Hi EdieinDeep, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

    The Windows Management Instrumentation Service runs under one of the svchost processes along with a bunch of other Windows Services. Are you sure that there are no other processes that are causing the CPU usage to spike to 100%?

    Download and run Process Explorer and see if you can identify if there are other Windows Services or processes that are causing your CPU usage to spike.

    Also one other thing you can try it is to Perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista and see if you can rule out other 3rd party programs causing a problem.

    Having the WMI service using 60%-100% of the CPU is not normal and that behavior definitely should not be happening.

    Thank you Terminator. I have downloaded Process Explorer and I see that the only big ticket items are System Idle @ 56% and WMI @ 35%... bouncing around of course. I will read about clean boot and give that a try.

    Since you have a HP product, a clean boot would probably give you the answer.

    Do you have the HP Wireless Assistant (HPWA) installed? If so, uninstall it, it doesn't serve any purpose anyway.

    Good Morning, I did the clean boot and I am not having any trouble now. In fact I can't even see a line item for WMA in Process Explorer. However I am not sure I understand what was eliminated in the clean boot that gave me this outcome. BTW HPWA was not installed.

    Go to the services manager to see which system components depend on WMI. Double click the Windows Management Instrumentation service, then select the Dependencies tab and note what is listed.

    In Task Manager under the Startup tab you will have to re-enable each startup item one at a time until you can determine which program is causing the CPU usage to spike. The default Windows services are not causing the problem, its a 3rd party program that is installed that is causing the WMI service to spike for some reason.

    I've enabled all but one Startup item and all totaled CPU was at about 12%. I noted that the line item for WMI was not appearing in processes screen. There was one file left in Startup called "NA" which looked suspicious. When I enabled it everything spiked up to about 60% and Malwarebytes became very busy. I immediately disabled it again. There are no properties associated with it and it does not disclose the file location. How do I safely remove it?

    I wouldn't. The problem is not a corrupted WMI service.
