WMI seems to work (at least for msinfo32) in safe mode, but when I am running normally it goes to shambles. I've tried every fix I could find to no avail. Below is my WMI Diagnostic report, and I can deliver the log via e-mail if a qualified person needs/can use it. NOTE: I am running on XP Home under an Administrator account.

13504 19:08:45 (0) ** => This error is typically due to the following major reasons:
13505 19:08:45 (0) ** - The application queried by the WMI provider is not installed, not available or not running
13506 19:08:45 (0) ** at the time of the request was made. This error can also be generated because
13507 19:08:45 (0) ** the application supporting the providers has been uninstalled.
13508 19:08:45 (0) ** - Some WMI providers (i.e. RSOP Planning Mode, Exchange 2003) are implemented as a WMI service.
13509 19:08:45 (0) ** Make sure the required services are successfully started.
13510 19:08:45 (0) ** - The WMI provider binary files are not accessible (i.e. access denied ACL).
13511 19:08:45 (0) ** - A WMI provider registration problem at the CIM level (MOFCOMP.EXE) or at the COM level (REGSVR32.EXE).
13512 19:08:45 (0) ** You must re-register the WMI provider by recompiling its associated MOF file with MOFCOMP.EXE
13513 19:08:45 (0) ** Note: - If the WMI provider DLL CIM and COM registrations are correct, this error can
13514 19:08:45 (0) ** be returned because the provider has a dependency on another DLL that cannot be
    13515 19:08:45 (0) ** loaded (missing or bad DLL)
13516 19:08:45 (0) ** - Dependencies can be found with the DEPENDS.EXE tool coming with the
13517 19:08:45 (0) ** Windows XP and Windows 2003 Support Tools. The command line is as follows:
    13518 19:08:45 (0) ** i.e. DEPENDS.EXE <PATH><Provider.DLL>
13519 19:08:45 (0) ** => When a WMI provider fails to load, it is possible to trace the provider load process by
13520 19:08:45 (0) ** submitting, via WBEMTEST and asynchronously, the following WMI event query:
    13521 19:08:45 (0) ** 'Select * From MSFT_WmiSelfEvent'
13522 19:08:45 (0) ** Then you can trace the following WMI events:
    13523 19:08:45 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_ComServerLoadOperationEvent
    13524 19:08:45 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_InitializationOperationEvent
    13525 19:08:45 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_LoadOperationEvent
13526 19:08:45 (0) ** and depending on the WMI operation executed, you can trace the following WMI events:
    13527 19:08:45 (0) ** i.e. for an enumeration:
    13528 19:08:45 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_CreateInstanceEnumAsyncEvent_Pre and Msft_WmiProvider_CreateInstanceEnumAsyncEvent_Post
    13529 19:08:45 (0) ** i.e. for a put operation:
    13530 19:08:45 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_PutInstanceAsyncEvent_Pre and Msft_WmiProvider_PutInstanceAsyncEvent_Post
    13531 19:08:45 (0) **
13532 19:08:45 (0) ** => If the software has been de-installed intentionally, then this information must be
13533 19:08:45 (0) ** removed from the WMI repository. You can use the 'WMIC.EXE' command to remove the provider
13534 19:08:45 (0) ** registration data and its set of associated classes.
    13535 19:08:45 (0) ** => To correct this situation, you can:
13536 19:08:45 (0) ** - Install or start the application supporting these providers.
    13537 19:08:45 (0) ** - Register the providers in CIM (MOFCOMP) or DCOM (REGSVR32).
13538 19:08:45 (0) ** Note: In this case the provider should also be listed in the 'missing WMI
13539 19:08:45 (0) ** provider DCOM registrations' or in the 'missing WMI provider files' section.
    13540 19:08:45 (2) !! WARNING: Re-registering with REGSVR32.EXE all DLL from 'C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\'
13541 19:08:45 (0) ** may not solve the problem as the DLL supporting the WMI class(es)
    13542 19:08:45 (0) ** can be located in a different folder.
13543 19:08:45 (0) ** You must refer to the class name to determine the software delivering the related DLL.

    Welcome SpiderLocMTGO

WMI can be a bear to fix sometimes.

    Before I dig in further:

    Start here
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Dial-a-fix_Full_d4899.html

Download and run page 2, click Tools (Hammer head)

    There are 2 proceedures...

First just try a reset near the bottom. Then reboot!

    That don't work then..

    Reinstall near top.

    May need XP CD!

    Mike

Whenever I try the "Reset" option I get the following error:

Access violation at address 77C0155D in module 'version.dll' Read of address 00000004.

    14196 21:02:33 (0) ** 55 error(s) 0x80041013 - (WBEM_E_PROVIDER_LOAD_FAILURE) COM cannot locate a provider referenced in the schema
14197 21:02:33 (0) ** => This error is typically due to the following major reasons:
14198 21:02:33 (0) ** - The application queried by the WMI provider is not installed, not available or not running
14199 21:02:33 (0) ** at the time of the request was made. This error can also be generated because
14200 21:02:33 (0) ** the application supporting the providers has been uninstalled.
14201 21:02:33 (0) ** - Some WMI providers (i.e. RSOP Planning Mode, Exchange 2003) are implemented as a WMI service.
14202 21:02:33 (0) ** Make sure the required services are successfully started.
14203 21:02:33 (0) ** - The WMI provider binary files are not accessible (i.e. access denied ACL).
14204 21:02:33 (0) ** - A WMI provider registration problem at the CIM level (MOFCOMP.EXE) or at the COM level (REGSVR32.EXE).
14205 21:02:33 (0) ** You must re-register the WMI provider by recompiling its associated MOF file with MOFCOMP.EXE
14206 21:02:33 (0) ** Note: - If the WMI provider DLL CIM and COM registrations are correct, this error can
14207 21:02:33 (0) ** be returned because the provider has a dependency on another DLL that cannot be
    14208 21:02:33 (0) ** loaded (missing or bad DLL)
14209 21:02:33 (0) ** - Dependencies can be found with the DEPENDS.EXE tool coming with the
14210 21:02:33 (0) ** Windows XP and Windows 2003 Support Tools. The command line is as follows:
    14211 21:02:33 (0) ** i.e. DEPENDS.EXE <PATH><Provider.DLL>
14212 21:02:33 (0) ** => When a WMI provider fails to load, it is possible to trace the provider load process by
14213 21:02:33 (0) ** submitting, via WBEMTEST and asynchronously, the following WMI event query:
    14214 21:02:33 (0) ** 'Select * From MSFT_WmiSelfEvent'
14215 21:02:33 (0) ** Then you can trace the following WMI events:
    14216 21:02:33 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_ComServerLoadOperationEvent
    14217 21:02:33 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_InitializationOperationEvent
    14218 21:02:33 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_LoadOperationEvent
14219 21:02:33 (0) ** and depending on the WMI operation executed, you can trace the following WMI events:
    14220 21:02:33 (0) ** i.e. for an enumeration:
    14221 21:02:33 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_CreateInstanceEnumAsyncEvent_Pre and Msft_WmiProvider_CreateInstanceEnumAsyncEvent_Post
    14222 21:02:33 (0) ** i.e. for a put operation:
    14223 21:02:33 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_PutInstanceAsyncEvent_Pre and Msft_WmiProvider_PutInstanceAsyncEvent_Post
    14224 21:02:33 (0) **
14225 21:02:33 (0) ** => If the software has been de-installed intentionally, then this information must be
14226 21:02:33 (0) ** removed from the WMI repository. You can use the 'WMIC.EXE' command to remove the provider
14227 21:02:33 (0) ** registration data and its set of associated classes.
    14228 21:02:33 (0) ** => To correct this situation, you can:
14229 21:02:33 (0) ** - Install or start the application supporting these providers.
    14230 21:02:33 (0) ** - Register the providers in CIM (MOFCOMP) or DCOM (REGSVR32).
14231 21:02:33 (0) ** Note: In this case the provider should also be listed in the 'missing WMI
14232 21:02:33 (0) ** provider DCOM registrations' or in the 'missing WMI provider files' section.
    14233 21:02:33 (2) !! WARNING: Re-registering with REGSVR32.EXE all DLL from 'C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\'

That was the information from the diagnostic that popped up.

I believe the log has secure information, I will PM it to you.

    EDIT:
It is also a 1.54 MB text file, so I'll have to e-mail it as an attachment. Can you post your e-mail address here or PM it to me?

    14200 18:56:19 (0) ** 55 error(s) 0x80041013 - (WBEM_E_PROVIDER_LOAD_FAILURE) COM cannot locate a provider referenced in the schema
14201 18:56:19 (0) ** => This error is typically due to the following major reasons:
14202 18:56:19 (0) ** - The application queried by the WMI provider is not installed, not available or not running
14203 18:56:19 (0) ** at the time of the request was made. This error can also be generated because
14204 18:56:19 (0) ** the application supporting the providers has been uninstalled.
14205 18:56:19 (0) ** - Some WMI providers (i.e. RSOP Planning Mode, Exchange 2003) are implemented as a WMI service.
14206 18:56:19 (0) ** Make sure the required services are successfully started.
14207 18:56:19 (0) ** - The WMI provider binary files are not accessible (i.e. access denied ACL).
14208 18:56:19 (0) ** - A WMI provider registration problem at the CIM level (MOFCOMP.EXE) or at the COM level (REGSVR32.EXE).
14209 18:56:19 (0) ** You must re-register the WMI provider by recompiling its associated MOF file with MOFCOMP.EXE
14210 18:56:19 (0) ** Note: - If the WMI provider DLL CIM and COM registrations are correct, this error can
14211 18:56:19 (0) ** be returned because the provider has a dependency on another DLL that cannot be
    14212 18:56:19 (0) ** loaded (missing or bad DLL)
14213 18:56:19 (0) ** - Dependencies can be found with the DEPENDS.EXE tool coming with the
14214 18:56:19 (0) ** Windows XP and Windows 2003 Support Tools. The command line is as follows:
    14215 18:56:19 (0) ** i.e. DEPENDS.EXE <PATH><Provider.DLL>
14216 18:56:19 (0) ** => When a WMI provider fails to load, it is possible to trace the provider load process by
14217 18:56:19 (0) ** submitting, via WBEMTEST and asynchronously, the following WMI event query:
    14218 18:56:19 (0) ** 'Select * From MSFT_WmiSelfEvent'
14219 18:56:19 (0) ** Then you can trace the following WMI events:
    14220 18:56:19 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_ComServerLoadOperationEvent
    14221 18:56:19 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_InitializationOperationEvent
    14222 18:56:19 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_LoadOperationEvent
14223 18:56:19 (0) ** and depending on the WMI operation executed, you can trace the following WMI events:
    14224 18:56:19 (0) ** i.e. for an enumeration:
    14225 18:56:19 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_CreateInstanceEnumAsyncEvent_Pre and Msft_WmiProvider_CreateInstanceEnumAsyncEvent_Post
    14226 18:56:19 (0) ** i.e. for a put operation:
    14227 18:56:19 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_PutInstanceAsyncEvent_Pre and Msft_WmiProvider_PutInstanceAsyncEvent_Post
    14228 18:56:19 (0) **
14229 18:56:19 (0) ** => If the software has been de-installed intentionally, then this information must be
14230 18:56:19 (0) ** removed from the WMI repository. You can use the 'WMIC.EXE' command to remove the provider
14231 18:56:19 (0) ** registration data and its set of associated classes.
    14232 18:56:19 (0) ** => To correct this situation, you can:
14233 18:56:19 (0) ** - Install or start the application supporting these providers.
    14234 18:56:19 (0) ** - Register the providers in CIM (MOFCOMP) or DCOM (REGSVR32).
14235 18:56:19 (0) ** Note: In this case the provider should also be listed in the 'missing WMI
14236 18:56:19 (0) ** provider DCOM registrations' or in the 'missing WMI provider files' section.
    14237 18:56:19 (2) !! WARNING: Re-registering with REGSVR32.EXE all DLL from 'C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBEM\'

    Hi Spider

    Had busy weekend.

Your logs do not point to any 1 thing I can peg as the problem.

My suggestion before we continue on is a Repair install of XP. This will reinstall XP while keeping all your software and settings but will repair any missing or corrupt windows system files.

First be sure you have an SP2 level XP CD.

If not get back and I will show you how to create one.

If you have a SP2 CD then insert in Drive and Boot from it as if to install Windows.

When setup runs it will offer an option to repair Windows using the Repair Console. This is not what you want, continue until setup finds an "existing windows installation" this is what you want. Chose Repair and setup will continue as a normal install.

Warning. If it finds no existing windows installation and does not offer to repair existing installation STOP and EXIT or you will lose data!

After this repair install finishes retest your WMI and get back.

    Mike

I tried this to no avail before, so I don't think that would fix it this time.

A full re-installation would probably do it, but what is the difference between a repair installation and reinstallation?

    Hi Spidy

OK I did not know you had aready did a repair install. Your question as to what is the difference makes me unsure if you really did!

The diff is that a re-install will overwrite the registy etc and therefore most installed software and drivers will be gone and need re-installing.

A true repair install of an existing windows installation replaces/repairs damaged or missing windows system files while leaving data and drivers and installed programs alone. If you do a reinstallation be ready have all you software and driver CD's ready.

WMI is pretty tough and resilient and kind of hard to damage. But as I told you at the beginning when it does get out of whack it can be a bear to fix!

    Let's take another shot

copy all the text at once between the lines but not the lines.

    ----------------------------
    winmgmt /clearadap
    winmgmt /kill
    winmgmt /unregserver
    winmgmt /regserver
    winmgmt /resyncperf
    net stop winmgmt
    del %windir%\system32\Wbem\Repository\*.* /s
    net start winmgmt
    %windir%\system32\wbem\wbemtest.exe
    -----------------------------

    Then
    Start-Run
    type
    cmd
    enter or OK

paste above into command window, hit enter until you are back to a command prompt.

    Close cmd

    Reboot

    Get back!

    Mike

Yeah, I know most of the differences between a full and repair install, just not the difference that would repair the WMI, if there is one.

I did what you said earlier and it is still a no-go. WMIDiag result below (I had to cut off the beginning because it resulted in too many characters):

13105 19:36:54 (0) ** => This error is typically due to the following major reasons:
13106 19:36:54 (0) ** - The application queried by the WMI provider is not installed, not available or not running
13107 19:36:54 (0) ** at the time of the request was made. This error can also be generated because
13108 19:36:54 (0) ** the application supporting the providers has been uninstalled.
13109 19:36:54 (0) ** - Some WMI providers (i.e. RSOP Planning Mode, Exchange 2003) are implemented as a WMI service.
13110 19:36:54 (0) ** Make sure the required services are successfully started.
13111 19:36:54 (0) ** - The WMI provider binary files are not accessible (i.e. access denied ACL).
13112 19:36:54 (0) ** - A WMI provider registration problem at the CIM level (MOFCOMP.EXE) or at the COM level (REGSVR32.EXE).
13113 19:36:54 (0) ** You must re-register the WMI provider by recompiling its associated MOF file with MOFCOMP.EXE
13114 19:36:54 (0) ** Note: - If the WMI provider DLL CIM and COM registrations are correct, this error can
13115 19:36:54 (0) ** be returned because the provider has a dependency on another DLL that cannot be
    13116 19:36:54 (0) ** loaded (missing or bad DLL)
13117 19:36:54 (0) ** - Dependencies can be found with the DEPENDS.EXE tool coming with the
13118 19:36:54 (0) ** Windows XP and Windows 2003 Support Tools. The command line is as follows:
    13119 19:36:54 (0) ** i.e. DEPENDS.EXE <PATH><Provider.DLL>
13120 19:36:54 (0) ** => When a WMI provider fails to load, it is possible to trace the provider load process by
13121 19:36:54 (0) ** submitting, via WBEMTEST and asynchronously, the following WMI event query:
    13122 19:36:54 (0) ** 'Select * From MSFT_WmiSelfEvent'
13123 19:36:54 (0) ** Then you can trace the following WMI events:
    13124 19:36:54 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_ComServerLoadOperationEvent
    13125 19:36:54 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_InitializationOperationEvent
    13126 19:36:54 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_LoadOperationEvent
13127 19:36:54 (0) ** and depending on the WMI operation executed, you can trace the following WMI events:
    13128 19:36:54 (0) ** i.e. for an enumeration:
    13129 19:36:54 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_CreateInstanceEnumAsyncEvent_Pre and Msft_WmiProvider_CreateInstanceEnumAsyncEvent_Post
    13130 19:36:54 (0) ** i.e. for a put operation:
    13131 19:36:54 (0) ** - Msft_WmiProvider_PutInstanceAsyncEvent_Pre and Msft_WmiProvider_PutInstanceAsyncEvent_Post
    13132 19:36:54 (0) **
13133 19:36:54 (0) ** => If the software has been de-installed intentionally, then this information must be

13135 19:36:54 (0) ** registration data and its set of associated classes.
    13136 19:36:54 (0) ** => To correct this situation, you can:

    OK lets do it differently

I have re-orderd the normal fixes for WMI. Some of these lines can repair WMI alone. But I have combined them to turn off WMI, then re-install while off, restart WMI, then reregister WMI and all related files.

And do this in Safe Mode. Some of these may not execute in Safe mode but ignore these if any.

Create a notepad document on desktop paste the below between the lines into and save it. This is so you will have the cut/paste available in Safe Mode.

    Boot to safe mode

open the document and copy and paste to the cmd prompt

    --------------------------------
    cd /d %windir%\system32\wbem
    winmgmt /clearadap
    winmgmt /kill

Reboot to full. Test for issue, if it still fails run this entire procedure in full mode, as this could finish any processes that may have failed in safe mode.

No need to post another WMI log if it fails yet again, until requested, they are all almost identical.

What I would like is the error produced by the failure of WMI to run as produced by an application. Not the WMI Diag but the message you get in an application that points to WMI!

I tried it in safe mode, rebooted, it didn't work. Tried it again in normal mode and rebooted and nothing changed.

The only program I know this may be directly affecting is Team Fortress 2 and msinfo32. In the Computer Management window when I got to the WMI properties it gives:

Failed to initialize all required WMI classes.

    Win32_Processor: WMI: Provider load failure
    Win32_WMISetting: Successful
    Security information: Successful
    Win32_OperatingSystem: WMI: Provider load failure

    OK whole new direction

    Start-Run
    paste or type
    services.msc
    click ok or hit enter

find Com+Event System confirm it is running

find Com+System Application probably not running confirm it starts if so leave running

find Remote procedure call (RPC) confirm started

then Remote procedure call (RPC) Locator probably not started, confirm it will start and leave running.

Get back with results if problems.

    Then

    Control panel-Add/remove
    on the left panel click
    Add/Remove Windows Componets

Be ready to insert XP install CD!

    in Windows Components
    Chose Managementand monitoring tools
if the 2 items here are not checked then do so and install them

    Restart and recheck for issue!

    Another thing!

Lets find out if this is an issue with this account.

Log off of your current account and log directly as Administrator.

    OR

Create a new Admin account. I usually keep an almost unused Admin account called Supervisor with password just in case the normal Administrater gets damaged.

Once logged onto this account check the WMI issues. If all is OK here then the error is with your everyday profile/account.

    Let me know!

OK that eliminates your normal profile as tthe problem and makes it a system wide problem.

BUT! What were the results of post #17?
