WLAN Autoconfig terminates with error %% - 1072896760

I have been running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit for some time now without any problems. Today I could not connect to the internet using my wireless adapter and this showed no available networks. When I checked the event log I saw these two event messages in the System log.

Event ID 4002 WLAN Autoconfig service has failed ot start - Error code 3222070536

Event ID 7023 The WLAN Autoconfig service terminated with the following error - %%-1072896760

I have Norton 360 with upto date virus definiations but a full scan reveals nothing. The wireless network was working OK yesterday (4th December). The last software installed was an update to Apple iTunes done on 3rd December (Wirelss network was working OK afterwards).

I have installed no new hardware. There is no indication of any viruses or malware (virus definitions were updated on 5th December)

I tried to do a systenm restore to a previous restore point but I get the follwoing errors:

Event ID 8193 and Event ID 13, both related to instantiating the VSS service.

My wireless network card is a Linksys WMP600N

Can anyone shed any light in what this problem is please?
