    Hi
I've recently installed my two PC's to a wireless network (Allied Telesyn) in my home.
When I was connecting my second PC I had some connection problems. I did nothing and rebooted and all was OK .. I was able to connect to the INTERNET with both computers..

The next day I switched my second PC on again I could not access the INTERNET.
It was saying "Detecting Proxy Settings" for a while in the bottom of the page .. Then it was saying "Finding www.msn.com" which is my default homepage.

I haven't changed any default settings for either PC's or settings in my wireless network as all have worked in the past.

My main PC is XP and the second is Windows 98.

Could it be just getting into Internet Options > Connections ??

    Can someone please help?

First thing is to track down where the problem is (at the PC, the router/wireless AP, or your ISP). The easiest way to do this is to trace the route to an IP address on the internet. You can do this by entering the command below at the command prompt:

    TRACERT 207.171.166.102

That address is for an amazon.com server so should work from anywhere.

When you run the command you should get a list of routers you pass over to get to the destination. The list gives response times and either the IP address of the router or its resolved name.

So the first listed response (1) should be from your router (the allied telesync unit, unless this is just a wireless AP and you have a seperate internet router). The next one (2) will be your Telecoms/ISP's first router (unless you have multiple routers on your network).

Therefore, if the Tracert fails to list even one router, the problem is the set up/configuration/hardware of your PC. If you get the response from your router but no more, it is probably a problem with your router set up or the connection to the ISP. If the failure occurs a little beyond the second response, it is probably a problem in your ISP's network and you should report it to them.

Do both PCs loose connectivity? If so it is a problem with the wireless router.
Often powering on and off will reset the connection.

If just one PC, it is probably a signal strength thing (assuming you did set up your TCP/IP to obtain an IP automatically, reran your firewall wizard, and confirmed that rebooting a couple times leaves you still connected.).

You are not using one PC as a gateway are you? You connected your broadband modem to the WAN port on the router and configured the router to connect automatically (entered the IP or the username/password provided by your ISP)and keep the connection always alive.

    The Fix

    Hi all

I printed your suggestions off at work so I can work on them at home and a friend suggested I go to my second computer that has WINDOWS 98 and go to START>RUN enter command WINIPCFG
A small box appears that shows you the IP address and you hit the RELEASE button and then the RENEW button.. Close the box then click your Internet Explorer Icon and bingo .. You're In.. Too easy but not explained in the manual.

Thanks again for the time you spent to reply and it's people like yourselves that makes this world a better place. :) :) :)
