I currently use a Belkin 4 Port wired router that appears to be going south. I plan to get a new router and can't decide whether to go wireless or wired. I have no immediated need for wireless for my configuration but do have family visitors with wireless laptops. Can wireless routers be used as wired routers as I currently do and then be configured to disable the wireless feature and only be activated when needed?

    yes & no!
Some wifi router also have a 4 port (or more) switch just like your wired router, while other wifi routers only have 1 port (for the modem).

I think most of what you are going to find in local retail outlets will be a wireless router that incorporates a 4 port switch. Tony is right, there are wireless routers that have no wired ports but just an RJ 45 or USB connector to a modem. There are also wireless travel routers that plug into a standard RJ45 port instead of a modem and there are single port (one wired connection out) wireless routers that plug into a modem. For the most part, you are going to find the overwhelming majority of wireless routers available at retail incorporate a 4 port switch.

    ;)

Since you are a neighbor, let me know if need any assistance in setting it up, e.g. setup security, encryption, etc etc. I can even do a site test and demonstrate being able to capture ALL traffic wirelessly that goes in & out of your network (a block away from your house), and when doing so you woulld never know your data was being captured. If pass this test then you can rest easy.
