So in the past everything worked fine but just last week it stopped working and now won't reconnect.

Here is all my information and issues.

I have a D-link n range router model 628. My connection is CenturyLink/DSL modem pk5000. In the past I switched the ip address of both so they wouldn't conflict with each other. My router address is 192.168.01, my modem address is 192.168.02. For a DSL connection you usually have to enter a PPoEE user name and password for the router to be able to connect with the modem. I was able to get my information from my phone/dsl company and enter both into my router settings area. Still now they cannot connect to each other no matter what. They both have up to date firmware. I have given up and am totally lost on this issue.

Even though my DSL modem has a wireless router built it, it is G range and is rather weak. I would like to have my D-link up running again so wherever in my house, my wireless connection is strong. If any of you have any suggestions or information to help me solve this issue I would be forever grateful. I have been to Windowsbbs many times before in the past and they have always been a great help, people like Broni from malware/virus area.

Hope to hear from you soon.

    David

First suggestion I have is to update your XP to SP3. You are running an unsafe SP.

Have you tried defaulting them both and then start over?

    1. Disconnect the dlink, connect computer to modem, change the modem IP address to 192.168.0.1. Turn OFF modem.

    2. Set computer with a static IP address of 192.168.0.99. Connect computer to dlink, change the dlink IP address to 192.168.0.2.

    3. Disable DHCP in the dlink. Turn OFF dlink. Addresses will get handled by the modem.

    4. Set computer to use DHCP (obtain IP address automatically). Turn OFF computer.

    5. Turn ON modem & let sync with ISP. (approx 10-30 seconds)

    6. Connect modem to one of the dlink LAN ports (1-4). Do NOT connect it to the dlink WAM (Internet) port. You are now using the dlink as a switch and an access point only.

    7. Turn ON dlink and let sync with modem.

    8. Connect computer to one of the dlink LAN ports. Turn ON computer.

This is the correct sequence to follow.

note: in the dlink setup page you are setting it to have a static IP address. You will not need to enter any ppoe info as the modem will be handling that.

also: setup the dlink wifi with a different SSID than the modem SSID. You will have 2 separate WLANS. Or for simplicity, just disable the wifi in the modem and only use the dlink wifi.

The opposite can also be done, let the dlink handle addressing and routing and the modem only handles the connection. To do this, you must put the modem into what's known as Bridged Mode. Call your ISP for instructions on how to do that as each DSL modem has different methods of setting up Bridged Mode.

Thanks for the quick timely reply. I am at school right now but later when I get home I will try all that you suggested.

My only question is that my DSL won't work in bridged mode. I have tried that in the past before but I will try it again following the instructions.

Thanks again and I will update this thread after I have tried your solutions.

To MrBill: you mean resetting both devices and trying to reset up the connection from scratch ? Yes, I have tried that.

Anyways, will update this thread once I get home.

There are specific settings required for Bridged Mode which must be obtained from your ISP. Not all DSL providers use the same protocols.

Easiest is to just use the dlink router NOT as a router but as a switch/access point, per my above instructions.

The reason things must get powered off completely is because the modem will associate itself with the MAC address of the device it's connected to. You cannot just disconnect and reconnect cat5 wires. Follow my instructions and it will work. If it doesn't then you will have made an error or a device is bad.

Post back & let us know what happens.

Yeah, that is what I meant. Pushing the little button with a paper clip or pencil and set them back to factory default. Then start over.

Try what TonyT said and let us know.
