    # 1 pc has xp home edition. # 2 pc has xp media edition. #2 pc is connected to the net through a hub then a router.

problem 1:sometimes I can access folders but not the net.
problem 2:sometimes I can access the net but not the folders
problem 3:sometimes I can not access anything.

I use pc 1 as the client and pc 2 as the server.

    That is the wrong tutorial.

problems 1,2,& 3 all relate to the client PC1 and server PC2.

I should have also asked, is this a new set up or has it worked in the past and suddenly developed these errors.

The tutorial I saw was about power point audio mngt.

The server 2-PC can not access 1-PC files.
2-PC is always good to access the net and it's own files.

Yes to this question.....When any one of the problems exists on one of the PC's does the other PC exhibit the same problem?

it has worked in the past then started problems recent.

on 2PC(desktop) I have changed wireless adapters(now using pci wireless card) but still problems.
on 1PC(notebook) it has built in wireless adapter.

I saw the correct tutorial. I have done that.

Ok, our posts have crossed over when I was editing post 4. The correct link is now there for the tutorial.

I will add another question. Why are you using a hub, your server PC could connect directly with the router with the client PC connected by wireless.

Our posts have crossed again. Total confusion, I'll get back on this problem in a few hours time, and try to re-assemble my thoughts.

One quick suggestion, is there a cordless phone nearby, if so unplug it and see if it makes any difference.

    no cordless phone.

I have started using a different micro wave but it is not running when I have these problems.

1pc and 2pc have the same user name and password.

OK, sorry for all the early confusion. I am starting to get a clearer picture of what is going on.

I can't see why you have a hub in the set up what purpose is it serving with both PC's being wireless? Try removing it and see if that helps.

I also have a cable running to the 1-PC as a backup but the cable restricts movement of the 1-PC. I am using the cable right now.

I will remove hub and see what happens. Maybe I should use the network setup wizard again?

Adding up what you have told me so far it sounds as if the fault is with the router. Correct me if I am wrong, but as I understand the situation, however you make a connection, be it with cable or wireless, both PC's display the same problems.

Can you tell me the make and model number of the router and was it set up by your ISP or did you install it yourself.

no...with cables attached all is fine.

when cable is detached from 1-pc:
    1. 1-pc is on wireless and i can not get file access to 2-pc or the net through 2-pc.
    2. 2-pc can not access files on 1-pc.
    3. 2-pc can get on the net at all times.

    I will try a summery...

1-pc refers to number 1 PC
2-pc refers to number 2 PC
There are only 2 PC systems on this network

    peer to peer wireless

    system has worked before
    no wireless phone
with Lan cables plugged in all works well
2-pc conected to the internet using Lan, router, dsl modem

1-pc(notebook-xp home edition) setup as wireless peer to peer to 2-pc(desktop-xp media edition)
    During wireless:
1-pc not connecting to the internet through 2-pc
1-pc not accessing files on 2-pc
2-pc not accessing files on 1-pc
2-pc internet connection fine at all times

OK, so everything is fine when both PC's are connected via cable.
PC2 is OK on cable or wireless.
The problem is when PC1 is on wireless.

The problem, therefore, appears to be centered on the wireless connection of PC1 which also breaks the file sharing between the two PC's. Have a look in device manager in PC1 and click on the + next to "Network Adapter" right click on the wireless adapter, click on "Properties" and under the driver tab click on uninstall. Reboot the PC and windows should reinstall the driver. See if that helps.

I hope I've got this right now, sorry it's taken so long. One bit I don't quite understand is the line:

The internet connection goes via cable or wireless to the router not through the other PC, or is there some set up here that I am unfamiliar with:confused:

Please also answer this question from post 15.

i have some shared folders on pc1
During wireless only, pc2 can not access pc1 folders.

During wizard network setup for pc2, you can select "allow other computers to connect to the internet through this computer ".

I will try that device manager procedure that you wrote.
