I have two computers; one is connected to the modem/router with the hard line from the phone (which is two rooms away). It takes about 30 feet of line from phone line to router, which is next to the computer. The other computer has a wireless card and gets the signal just fine. Computer 1 is the better computer and is used for gaming, which leads to this question:
Would it be a faster connection if Computer 1 had a wireless card and I moved the wireless router closer to the phone jack? Faster than the 30 or so feet of line it goes through? My son, the gamer, always complains about high ping rate, which led to this question.
Computer 2 is old and naturally slow - no intent on speeding it up.....

I don't know what phone system you have in Germany, but I have a feeling it is ISDN. In which case the "phone line" may well be CAT5 and it will be much faster than the wireless connection.

If it is more like a UK telephone system (using thin cable and small RJ11 (10mm across) telephone plugs, rather than the larger RJ45 (12mm across) used on computer networks), then you may have a signal quality issue. Running a network connection over this type of telephone connection is not a robust solution, and I'd go for the wireless connection in preference.

However, which ever you use - wired or wireless, it is worth pointing out that the bottleneck in your system will be the router connection to the internet. Changing the network configuration inside your network is unlikely to have much of an effect. In particular, I doubt moving the router closer to the telephone jack will make any difference (unless this involves removing a telephone extension cable).

    Thanks for the response!
Part of the gaming "problems" are a result of the particular servers being based in the UK and Ireland (in regards to the games my 15 year old currently plays). Another issue is probably the Deutsche Telecom stranglehold on DSL in this country (high priced and not all that fast).

funnily i have played plenty of online games in the past and now, and have played many people in Europe, and most are in Germany, and they have better pings than i do and i have a pretty good ping. Your problem is likely to be regional, or phone line related. Also try unplugging all phone and fax machines and see if it improves as i have seen these cause problems, and have seen plenty bodgey line filters if you use them there.

Yes moving the router nearer to the phone point does help signal strength, bt may not be your solution by itself.
