We use Verizon for internet with a MiFi so don't have the option of a wireless router. I'd like to have a wireless network for our laptops and tablets to communicate with each other and also with the MiFi and wireless printer.

To move a file from one laptop to another or the printer requires using a USB drive or emailing it (which uses valuable data). Everything is wireless.... is there a way for all my stuff to communicate without a router, or with a router that doesn't have to be hooked to the internet?

You will need to use a wifi router that has the capability of connecting to the MiFi and then connect computers to that router. The router must have the feature "Client Mode ". Here's an example:
Connect a wired network to the Verizon MiFi 2200

    Thanks, Tony.

That was a lot of reading. I will just continue to transfer files with USB drives.

I just thought (hoped?) there was an easy way for all of our wireless devices to communicate. Not so, it appears.

A cheap wireless router would be a lot quicker than using a thumb drive.

A simple wifi router will work just fine for file transfers locally. Setup the wifi router following its basic setup instructions. Then, computer 1 & computer 2 must disconnect from the mifi, then both connect to the wifi router, then transfer files from comp 1 to comp 2. To use Internet again comps must disconnect from wifi router and reconnect to the mifi.

    Your choices are:

    1. use a wifi router like above. (inconvenient)
    2. use a wifi router with the capability of grabbing the mifi Internet connection and then managing the computers as a local network. This requires plenty of tech understanding and knowledge.
    3. usb file transfers (easier than option 1 above).
    4. email (uses too much of your data plan)
    5. use a wireless bridge device & a wifi router (2 new devices). Similar as option 2 but more expensive & slightly easier to setup and configure.

Not necessarily because one must disconnect 2 computers from the mifi then connect to the wifi router, then reconnect to mifi for Internet again. Thus one would have to walk to the other comp to disconnect/reconnect. 2 trips. Thumb drive = one trip to the target computer.

Unless of course the wifi adapter is capable of virtual adapters where one is connect to mifi and the virtual is connected to the wifi, then bridging those together virtually. As far as I know, that's only capable in Linux using certain adapeters with Atheros chipsets, possibly some other chipsets nowadays. On my linux laptop I could be connected to a dozen wifi routers at the same time and do stuff on all connections simultaneously.
