Hi, im not very good at the whole networking thing, but this should be fairly easy for many of you to answer.

Anyways, here is my problem, I used to connect to the internet, by having my Cabel Modem go directly to a four port linksys hub (all four ports were being used), but because I got my new laptop, I got a five port linksys hub so I could connect the linksys Wireless-G Access Point (model WAP54G) to it, and still have my wired network.

All the wired computers connect directly to the internet fine like they did before, but I can't get my laptop to connect to the Wireless-G Acess Point.

I used the soft ware that came with it but it just tells me it was Unable to detect a Wireless-G Acess Point on the Network.

I then tried the software that came with it on one of the directly wired computers and got the same message thinking it might enable it or something (lol not really shure what I was doing there though.)

When I view all available wireless networks on my laptop (toshiba satellite M45-165) it shows one Linksys "Unsecured wireless network ", one NETGEAR "unsecured wireless network" (I am assuming it is one of my neibors) and something that says linksys_SES_29353 which says security-enabled wirless network.

When I try to connect with the First Linksys, it tells Limited or no connectivity, and the light link light of the Wirless-G Acess Point does not light up.

When I try to connect with the linksys_SES_29353 before it asked me for a WEP/WAP, but now it just says Windows is unable to connect to the selected network, "The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again ". The link light of the Wirless-G Acess Point did not light up.
I'm not shure if I changed anything, but I don't think I did.

All the computers are running windows XP Home edition.

Any Help at all is greatly appreciated. I tried to be a thorough as possible too.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Right click My Computer & click Manage, click Device Manager. If the wireless NIC is installed properly it should be there under Network Adapters. Is it showing there?

Connect to the router's admin utility using one of the other systems. In Internet Explorer try conecting to 192.168.0.1. The account is admin and the password is probably blank, but might be "admin ".

    Check all of the settings.

Try changing the channel being used. If it is on 6 change it to 11 or 1.

WEP/WAP is probably disabled, but check to be sure.

Change the name of the SSID to something unique and then make the same change in the properties of your wireless network card on the laptop. This name is case-sensitive.

    Try connecting now.

BearNunya: I did so and yes it is there under Network Adapters "Atheros AR5005G Wireless Network Adapter ".

NetDoc: I tried connecting via Internet Explorer to the IP but it wasn't working. Perhaps it is some other Adress?

    Once again thank you :D

I believe the default Linksys IP is 192.168.1.1 The user name is blank and password is admin (make sure to change this to something else that you can remember) Make sure you are trying to access this from one of the wired machines. Follow the rest of NetDoc's advise.

Hm... I tried that IP too (from one of the wired machines) but still no luck. My connection is from the modem to the Hub, then to each of the computers and the Wireless-G Acess Point (just double checking I set all the facts).

    Thanks again :)

Sounds like the AP is on a diffrent Subnet than your desktop.

What is the IP address of your desktop?

The default IP address for that AP is 192.168.1.245

You definitely need to resolve any IP issues. YOur documentation with the router should tell you which address to use. Then check what address you have on your PC.

You can also call Linksys for support.

    Configure the AP

With your Acess Point (AP) connected directly to your PC, install the software for your device. The default password for all Linksys products is admin... FYI. Once you have installed your device (be sure to write down all of the settings you choose from the CD's set-up options), open Internet Explorer and type in the IP address of your AP. The username and password window should pop up. Type admin in the password field. This will bring you to the configuration pages. Since I am not currently hooked up to my Linksys network, I cannot log in to see exactly where you need to go. It's something like Wireless Connectivity or whatever. There are four options, you want to choose Wireless Repeater if your unit is just plugged into the wall. Make sure that all of the settings of your AP match your hub except the last three digits of the IP address (should be obtained automatically) and the SSID. For example, if your router's IP is 192.168.1.101 on "Linksys ", your AP should be something like 192.168.1.102 on "Linksys1 ". Then, your wireless adapter will be able to differentiate between the networks and you will see each one. Right click on the wireless icon, go to open network connections, right-click your wireless connection icon and click on properties. From there you can configure you available networks in order of preference. For example, you can eliminate the automatic connection to your neighbor's Netgear wireless signal. Let me know if this helps. I can always log on from my Linksys network and give you a step-by-step for the AP config if my directions were somewhat unclear due to my inability to access the proper information from my current location.
