    Hi

when I got the last up date for some reason I couldn't use wireless internet

so to test it I backed up my computer and got rid of all the files then try to connect to the internet. it worked then I reinstall the files later. Well today I had the same problem and I did the same thing as yesterday and here I am

well this tread is basically a question I need to ask upon the situation.

Is it the update that stops me from connecting to a wireless server or is it just me?

    or

is it something that is within those seven updates.

well I would test and see tomorrow
    but I need help

    Hello zen,

I've changed your thread title to reflect your specific problem.

Also moving this thread to the Networking section.

    What 7 updates?

Had a similar problem after auto update installed the 10 mid August windows updates. The difference is that my connection is wired dsl. In order to get my connection to work again I had to restore to the day before the updates using safe mode. Restore would not work in regular mode. I then disabled auto update, and installed each of the updates one at a time with my Norton auto protect turned off. My internet connection is working properly now.

Also have had problems with some of the HP supplied updates. The worse was a update to my bios, which froze my system and keyboard and mouse. After several hours with HP tech support they gave up(kept telling me to hit the F11 key, even though I told them that the keyboard was also disabled) and sent a new motherboard and a local tech to install it, and all is now working ok. But I am now afraid to install any updates(software and hardware) from Windows and from HP.

Why do these updates cause so many problems in Windows Vista Home Premium?

    What 7 updates?

A couple days ago Windows told me there were 8 updates available for my system. Three critical, four recommended, and one optional. Using Windows Vista Home Premium on a HP media center desktop.

    hi Marv,

As with XP, not a good idea to auto update.

Set your MS Update option to Notify and install the updates one at a time spaced out at least a day between. That way you have a chance to pin down a problem to a specific update and roll it back.

Only criticals create System Restore points. So if an Update is not labeled as Critical, then create a Manual restore point prior the install.

    Charles,

You are so right, Your advise is well taken. I still question the premise that the updates are suppose to improve your system rather than make it worse which they sometimes do.

the most common problem by far with wireless internet ( wi fi) is signals from neighbours drifting in
You will get a strong signal but no inernet as the network card bounces between the two signals and cannot lock on an ip
The simple solution is to change the channel from the default channel 6
Any other channel is fine - first choices are channels 1 and 11
The stray signals can come out of nowhere and can be sporadic - say a wireless router attached to dsk that is set to come on only with activity or someone who unplugs their router when not using it
A lot of times you cannot even see the signal in the windows wireless utility and it can even be a totally diffirent brand router with a totally different ( set to factory default ) ssid
    Change the channel
Make sure the router is high and uncluttered
You might locate the signal with a utility such as netstumbler

a very useful network management utility is

Security updates are usually OK, but still best to install one at a time so can easily roll back to previous setup in case something breaks. And rule of thumb is NEVER get driver updates from Windows Update site, always get driver updates from the hardware manufacturer or comp manufacturer.

Personally, I don't use updates at all anymore, haven't updated any of my XP comps in over a year with no issues. (exception is the Daylight Savings Time update)

I think that strategy can work well - as long as you take other steps to secure your computer. Those being: running and keeping up-to-date an anti-virus system; enabling and maintaining a firewall; and managing your spyware threat (either by restricting the sites you visit or using anti-spyware software - probably the latter is the best bet).

PeteC's guide "Keep your Computer free from Viruses, Trojans, Spyware and other Malware" gives some useful advice on Anti-virus, Firewall and Anti-spyware solutions.

    Agreed!
To all readers: Don't take my above & below statements as advice.
My computer practices are unsafe unless one is expert at it.

I use a router that secures my network agains all unsolicited traffic, I have an up-to-date antivirus that I never run and rarely use, I have many many tools to remove viruses and malware, and if I should happen to get some type of comp infection I can manually remove it or restore my entire system in 4 minutes. I will sometimes infect a computer of mine purposely so as to learn about it, then I can apply what I learned to my clients' infected comps.

    Practice safe computing!

the most common problem with wi fi internet by far is rogue signals from neighbors router
change the channel in the control panel of the router
The routers are almost all set to a default of 6 ( in the middle of the 12 channels)
You will not see the signal that is causing trouble
You will see your good signal but have no internet connect
    Change the channel
Channels 1 and 11 are first best picks
    After that try others
Your problem can be sporadic in nature
Change the ssid from the standard default of Linksys, wireless or default
even if you add a digit only
Make sure the router is high and uncluttered
If you have further problems try resetting the router and set it up again from scratch. Unplug the broadband modem as well.
