i think I got a nasty virus on my computer which was slowing it down really bad. I talked with someone who told me to try and wipe my hard drive with kill disk and when I try to install windows xp home, or pro I get these messages when I hit install or the up arrow key to try and partian an area. I got this message before I did the wipe too when I was trying to just format my harddrive.

    stop: 0x0000050 (0xbf2941a8, 0x00000000,0xf84c6f3e, 0x00000002)

    setupdd.sys - address f84c6f3e base at f84a200000, datestamp 3d6dd67f.

if someone can help great, I am hoping I have not completely destroyed my computer.

    thank you
    brendan

Brendan, I read some time ago that Kill disk will wipe the disk and you may have to use a boot disk and use FDISK to set up new partitions before you can install XP. I may be wrong so I hope some one more knowledgeable reads your post and gives you the right info. Just wait for one of the Techos. Neil.

bastengo - Welcome to the Board :)

A significant part of your post is that you received the Stop Error before you used the kill disk.

From what I read on this you have a hardware problem - either bad RAM or incompatible hardware. If the computer was working OK before incompatible hardware would seem to be unlikely.

    Some reading here .....

Windows XP problems with damaged or incompatible hardware

When I Install XP Home I Get A SETUPDD.SYS Error

Follow some of the suggestions given such as remove all the PCI cards with the exception of the graphics card - unless onboard graphics, remove and reseat the RAM and if you have more than one stick try using each one in turn and swap them around the slots.

I would also test the hard drive using the manufacturer's disk diagnostics ....

thank you for the info will look into all of this. I have heard that possibly because I have a customer built computer that there may be problems there as well as maybe a bad hard drive and or ram from some people. Any more suggestions would be great but I will keep working on it.

if I read you correctly, you are saying that you want to re-install XP, but it won't do so. Are you happy to wipe everything that is on your hard drive (I assume due to virus) if the answer is yes and you have already started using kill disk I would suggest to use one of the hard drive manufacturers (your drive) disk Utility's and and clean it up completely.
If you then still have the problem of not being able to install XP go to MS and download the Floppy or CD XP install disk.
in Floppy format it takes 6 it will get it up to the point so it will read your XP CD. It is a slow process but I know it has worked for me when I Formatted a corrupted HD to ones and zeros and I had no boot configuration files left.
