Many have probably seen that WinZip has released a new version 10 (actually two--Standard and Pro).
    http://www.winzip.com/prodpagewz.htm
Neither is free to those who had earlier versions, though I have received a 50% off offer as a buyer of an earlier version.
Most of the new features do not really turn me. I do not use WinZip that much.
However WinZip is apparently introducing two new zip formats.
"Extracting files compressed with PPMd or bzip2 requires a compatible Zip file utility. Currently WinZip 9.0 and 10.0 will process Zip files compressed using the bzip2 method. WinZip 10.0 is required for PPMd-compressed files." I understand that PPMd files are really for developers which I am not.

Of course there are several other (and free) zip programs--even WinXP has one built in, but I assume they will fare no better with the new formats than say, WinZip 9.
So I have some concern whether I will be able to view files encrypted in these new formats if I do not Update. Does anyone have any experience or insight?

If user must buy the program ... my humble opinion, is going to be a slow sale. If I'm distributing zipped files/program for free or sale to the public, forcing end user to buy an additional program to open it .... would be suicidal.

If this compression catches on, won't be long it will be included in many of the popular free zip programs that are available.

I also thought that upgrades for winzip10

was not a fair and reasonable thing to do.

It seems that a lot of programs have got so full of whistles and bells that a lot of them are memory hogs.

Another No update was ACDSee who wanted $50 to have a version where they had cleaned up their bugs.

No thank you to a lot of updates until they offer real value or new items :p :p

I purchased winzip in 1999 for 15 bucks. I use version 9 at present and do not intend to get version 10. No need for it. I'd say I got my money's worth out of this investment and I am still getting a good ROI.
