WinXP has a text-to-speech somewhat similar to Macintosh's SimpleText. It is only available on WinXP and only comes with one default voice. Does anyone know a way to use this on other versions of windows such as copying or updating some .dll or .ocx files? What files are responsible for this?
Also, is there a way to add/customize the voices?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light.
    Peace,
    Rich S.

    Hi Jasp182
Welcome to the boards. I'm anxious to hear how you make out with Windows XP Speech recognition. I've yet to hear anyone have luck?
Having said that..... perhaps this thread and maybe this one will help a little?

Moving XP things to other versions of Windows is just asking for trouble.
Depending what you want to do, and whether you want the little characters as well, you might find information here:
    www.msagentring.org
or, if you want something relatively simple that has the whole package to get you started, try Ace Talking Reminders. This app will read whatever is copied to the clipboard as well as remind you of things:
    www.goace.com .
Speech-recognition is another matter. It seems you were asking about text-to-speech primarily. To teach a non-XP computer to understand speech, try Talk2Desktop:
    http://www.4dev.com/talk2d/index.htm

    For more info yet:
    http://www.speechtechnology.com/free/links.html

MS also has downloads of the msagent, speech engines, and speech-recognition engines that are included in the above apps.

I just tried AT&T's "Natural Voices" text-to-speech engine. It really is the closest thing to natural speech. You can find TextAloud here:
